Eric Holder blasts Rep. Darrell Issa: Your conduct is ‘inappropriate,’ ‘shameful’ and ‘unacceptable’

Posted May 16, 2013

As Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., pressed Attorney General Eric Holder for details about a phone call from Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, Holder lost his temper.

Holder interrupted Issa’s line of questioning and declared that he would not stop talking.

“No, I am not going to stop talking now,” Holder said after Issa tried to ask him a follow-up question.

“Mr. Chairman, would you inform the witness as to the rules of the committee?” Issa asked, speaking over Holder’s protest.

“It is inappropriate and too consistent with the way in which you conduct yourself as a member of Congress,” Holder continued. “It is unacceptable. It is shameful.”

AP President Scoffs at DOJ Response to Phone Scandal

Posted May 15, 2013

The Associated Press is far from satisfied by the Department of Justice's initial response regarding the government grabbing months of phone records from the wire service.

Gary Pruitt, president and CEO of The Associated Press, sent a sternly worded follow-up letter to the Department of Justice today, one which said its attempt at explaining what happened hardly proved reassuring and appeared dubious at face value.

The scope of the subpoena was overbroad under the law, given that it involved seizing records from a broad range of telephones across AP’s newsgathering operation. More than 100 journalists work in the locations served by those telephones. How can we consider this inquiry to be narrowly drawn?

Rather than talk to us in advance, they seized these phone records in secret, saying that notifying us would compromise their investigation. They offer no explanation of this, however.

NAACP Chairman Emeritus: IRS Right to Target Tea Party 'Racists'

Posted May 15, 2013

Julian Bond, chairman emeritus of the NAACP, said Tuesday on MSNBC that the IRS and the federal government were correct in targeting conservative groups for added scrutiny over tax-exempt status.

Bond compared the IRS actions against the Tea Party to actions he claimed were taken against the NAACP by the IRS in 2004 after he criticized then-president George W. Bush. But while Bond claimed that the alleged 2004 actions were wrong, the present-day actions against the Tea Party were just fine.

I don’t think there’s a double standard at all. I think it’s entirely legitimate to look at the tea party. I mean, here are a group of people who are admittedly racist, who are overtly political, who tried as best they can to harm President Obama in every way they can. They are the Taliban wing of American politics and we all ought to be a little worried about them.

Bond was asked if his perspective on the Tea Party was “a little harsh.” He responded saying, “The truth hurts.”

IRS Intimidation Forced Founder To Shut Down Tea Party Group

Posted May 15, 2013

Already this morning, though, Klein's spin is falling apart. Chris Good of ABC News reports that Jennifer Stefano of Philadelphia was so intimidated by the IRS that she closed her Tea Party down:

"In the documents that were sent to me, if you did not tell the whole truth by not putting all your personal information out there by Facebook, by Twitter, of your personal relationship with candidates and parties ... it could be considered perjury and perjury carried jail time," Stefano, 39, told ABC News.

"That was frightening and that's why I shut it down. I shut my group down."

Tom Zawistowski, former president of the Ohio Liberty Coalition, told ABC News that, "The reason for this attack by the IRS on the tea party was to make sure we were not as effective in 2012 as we were in 2010, and that's what they did[.]"

Obama Administration Under Siege From 3 Huge Scandals: Here’s Why It Could All Come Crashing Down

Posted May 15, 2013

In just one week, President Barack Obama’s political machine has switched from endless campaign to survival mode. And for the first time in Obama’s presidency, the damage to his regime may be permanent.

Three revelations have come together like an avalanche. First, there was a Benghazi hearing that proved beyond any reasonable doubt that this administration is feckless, dishonest, and cravenly politicized. But in its aftermath on Friday, an executive branch information dump dropped another bombshell: the IRS does indeed target and intimidate conservative groups.

This appalling admission from a senior IRS official was obviously meant to slide into the news cycle and dissipate over the weekend. This unseemly public relations gambit has become a hallmark of the Obama approach to all issues, regardless of their importance to the nation. Deny or delay, spin and win.

And, to the discredit of our electorate, it has worked—until perhaps now.

‘Taking Revisionist History Too Far’: Washington Post Fact-Checker Gives Obama ‘Four Pinocchios’ on Benghazi Claim

Posted May 15, 2013

Eight months after the terrorist attack that killed four Americans in Benghazi, the debate on whether President Barack Obama immediately identified the incident as a terrorist attack continues.

The day after it happened, I acknowledged that this was an act of terrorism,” Obama said at a press conference on Monday. Though Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler has written several times before about what exactly Obama actually said that day and what he meant, Kessler is once again examining the issue. This time, he’s turning up the heat.

“The president’s claim that he said ‘act of terrorism’ is taking revisionist history too far,” Kessler wrote in a post Tuesday, “given that [Obama] repeatedly refused to commit to that phrase when asked directly by reporters in the weeks after the attack.”

German Homeschooling Family’s Request for Asylum Denied by the U.S. Government

Posted May 15, 2013

The Romeike family has for years been battling for the right to educate their children as they see fit.  Today, the United States government has denied their request.

Originally from Germany, Evangelical Christians Uwe and Hannelore Romeike wanted to homeschool their six children, but it is against the law in Germany.  They faced threats of legal action from the government and crippling fines before choosing to immigrate to the United States in 2010, seeking political asylum.

U.S. Immigration Judge Lawrence Burman granted the Romeike’s request, but it was overturned in 2012 by the Board of Immigration Appeals, after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement challenged the decision.

Today, in the words of the Home School Defense League Association, which has represented the family: “The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Obama Administration’s denial of asylum granted to the Romeike family.”

The parents could face jail time if forced to return home.

Conservative groups 'harassed' by IRS

Posted May 16, 2013

(Interview with Canton Tea Party's Bob Hall)

Wednesday evening, President Obama announced the acting IRS commissioner has resigned.

Steven Miller submitted his resignation to the United States Secretary of the Treasury after an audit from the inspector general showed that the IRS targeted conservative groups that were applying for tax exempt status.

Judge orders dashcam video release in Grisham ‘rudely displaying of weapon’ case

Posted May 16, 2013

A visiting judge on Wednesday ordered the Bell County Attorney’s Office to release police dashcam video in the case of C.J. Grisham, the Texas soldier whose March 16 arrest by Temple police spawned a viral video.

While the law, specifically Brady v. Maryland, requires release of evidence which is often handled as a simple administrative matter, the delay in this case suggests prosecutors’ discontent with the widespread media attention and public scrutiny.

Today, Tarrant County resident Konni Burton officially launched her campaign against Wendy Davis for State Senate District 10. Konni Burton is a conservative activist who has been engaged in grassroots politics at the state and national level. In addition to her boots on the ground work to send conservatives to Austin and D.C., she has worked to educate & mobilize other grassroots conservatives as well. She has worked with various conservative grassroots groups and is currently on her second legislative session with the Tea Party Caucus Advisory Committee that travels regularly to Austin to meet with legislators.

In announcing her candidacy Burton stated, “After being approached by conservatives across Tarrant County about running for State Senate, I’ve decided to enter the race. With the federal government’s mounting debt, it is imperative that we make Texas strong. We need public servants in Austin that will protect the taxpayer and put Texas on the path of sound fiscal policy while reducing the size of our state government. We need to keep our state's Rainy Day Fund strong so that it’s there for our citizens in the event of an economic downturn. We need to prevent the implementation of ObamaCare in Texas so that this government overreach doesn’t bankrupt our state. We need to stop the state of Texas from using our tax dollars to pick winners and losers in the market. Parents need to have the choice to choose which school is best for their child's education. And our 2nd amendment rights need to be protected and the rule of law enforced so that our citizens can feel safe in their communities.”

Leaders, grassroots activists and elected officials in the district and across Texas weighed in on Burton’s announcement.

Bedford State Representative Jonathan Stickland endorsed Burton saying, "Konni Burton is one of the strongest conservative leaders in Tarrant County. She’s a fiscal and social conservative who can articulate our values in a way very few can. I'm proud to endorse her campaign and look forward to serving alongside her in the Texas Legislature."

Robert D. Smith, Board & Steering Committee Member of the NE Tarrant Tea Party said, “I have known Konni for several years. She is a great conservative. I have worked with her on conservative causes and she goes all out dedicating her time, talents and resources. She will do anything needed to support her candidate or cause. I support her because I know she will make a great State Senator.”

Executive Director of Grassroots America and chairman of the Tea Party Advisory committee JoAnn Fleming also endorsed Konni saying, “"Texas desperately needs leaders who will actively work for - not just talk about - limited government, economic liberty for all, and driving special corporate interests out of the Capitol. Konni Burton understands state government needs to steer clear of piling more debt on future generations of Texans because she knows "borrow and spend" is just as bad as "tax and spend." For commonsense leadership that won't play games with your money and your liberty, support Konni Burton for state senate. I am."

Konni and her husband Phil reside in Colleyville and have two daughters. Tori is a Junior at Tarleton State University and Faith is a Junior at Grapevine High School. Konni and her family are active members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Richland Hills.

Brady uses Texas Local Government Code 9.004 to pass Smart Meter Opt-out Amendment

Posted May 15, 2013

Texas Local Government Code 9.004 is the “People’s Power to Petition”. This law allows citizens to form petitions on issues important to the people. With the lesser of 5% of registered voters or 20,000 signatures, items can be placed on a ballot for the vote of the people. The Smart Meter battle waged in Brady is a small sampling of battles waged all across Texas communities. On September 25, 2012, Lt. Governor Dewhurst sent a letter to Senator John Carona, chairman of the Business and Commerce (B&C) Committee to call for public hearing to “ensure that business practices do not jeopardize the health of Texans.” This hearing took place on October 9, 2012. Since then, both the PUC and B&C Committee have conducted one hearing each regarding SB 241.

The Smart Meter initiative began with the 2005 HB 2129 bill by Dennis Bonnen that “encouraged” the use of this technology. In a February 11, 2012 letter, Representative Bonnen wrote, “I am concerned that certain providers are acting beyond the purview of the HB 2129 by forcing these meters on customers. This was not the intent of the legislation.” In this legislative session, Senator Carona authored SB 241 which allows citizens to Opt Out of the Smart Meters at no charge. The bill passed out of committee by a 5 to 2 vote in favor of the bill. Support of 21 Senators is necessary the SB 241 to go before the Senate floor for a vote. Latest count reveals that two more Senators are still needed. Time is very short to complete the legislative process through the House.

Please contact your Texas State Senator to express your support of SB 241! Find your Texas State Senator here. We only need one more Senator to bring this to a floor vote!

Concerned Women for America of Texas
Urges "YES" on SB 1406

Thank you for all your prayers, phone calls, and e-mails regarding SB 1406 "The CSCOPE bill". This has been the major bill we have been working on since day one of session, and we are getting excellent movement on this bill. SB 1406 will be heard tomorrow on the House floor. CWA of Texas will be there. If this bill passes as written, it is an exact match to the Senate version, and we believe it will head straight to the Governor's desk to be signed into law. CWA of Texas believes CSCOPE needs to have oversight by the State of Texas because it was paid for using federal, state, and local tax dollars. That is what makes CSCOPE different from any curriculum in this state. It was created with Texas tax dollars. If our House members do not support this bill, they are saying to Texans that it is OK for a non-transparent, unaccountable, un-elected bureaucrat to run amuck with millions of our tax dollars and the hearts and minds of our children with their slanted materials.

Please call your State Representative TODAY and ask them to
support accountability and vote "Yes" to SB 1406

True the Vote Founder: IRS Tea Party Scandal 'Beginning of Tyranny'

Posted May 14, 2013

Tea party groups' allegations that the IRS has long been targeting them for their political beliefs were recently confirmed by an apology from the IRS. The scandal gained traction as congressional leaders began efforts to hold the IRS accountable and understand the depths of the federal government’s politically-motivated abuses of power.

Yet given the history of such abuses, the problem may extend further than the IRS, and require a "government-wide" probe across several agencies, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has suggested.

The issue was initially believed to only involve groups with “Tea Party” or “patriots” in their names being singled out for greater scrutiny by the IRS, but recent admissions reveal that a wide range of conservative and constitution-oriented groups were singled out by the federal government. Most media outlets have focused on 2012 as the year the abuses occurred, but one prominent Tea Party-initiated organization, True the Vote, began to run into alleged federal government abuses in 2010--from a variety of agencies.

On the way to Blogcon, I struck up a conversation with a longtime Texas rancher who was headed home. We ended up talking about the real situation for ranchers. "Rancher X" owns a large ranch near MacAllen, Texas. The following is not word for word, but captured from my notes during a two hour discussion.

The entire border area is dominated by corruption. There are corrupt judges, corrupt ICE agents, corrupt sheriffs, and it's not just me saying that: you can read about indictments and convictions every week. It seems like there's a new federal indictment of a district judge, a border patrol agent, a local sheriff, etc. coming down that often.

We're one of the poorest areas in the country, so lots of federal dollars are headed here. But it's not fair to say that all of the corruption is just fueled by the drugs, humans and other stuff smuggled over the border. Also, I shouldn't say "smuggled", because it's just flowing over the border. All of the money corrupts every layer of government. Remember that officials get elected with money, and they are put into office by money.
