CPAC: 'District of Corruption' Taps Public Anger

Posted March 15, 2013

On the opening day of CPAC, Judicial Watch screened its latest film, "The District of Corruption." The movie, by filmmaker Steve Bannon, chronicles recent scandals and corruption within the federal government. While focusing chiefly on scandals in the Obama Administration, like Fast and Furious and Solyndra, for example, the film also looks back at influence peddling in the Clinton Administration, as well as the Bush Administration's obsession with secrecy. It is a searing, bi-partisan indictment of an emerging ruling class.

"Government corruption isn't a Republican or Democrat issue," said Tom Fitton, President of Judicial Watch. "It isn't even a liberal or a conservative issue. It's an American issue."
Seven of the ten wealthiest counties in America surround Washington, DC. While the rest of the country worries about pink slips or foreclosures, the DC sky line is sprinkled with high-rise construction cranes. Self-dealing and special interests are a bi-partisan lifestyle in the nation's capital. "District of Corruption" is a powerful testament why Americans feel their leaders have grown out of touch with the country.

Boehner: House Will Fund Obamacare in CR; Fears Obama Would Shutdown Government

Posted March 15, 2013

(CNSNews.com) – House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he would not include language to defund Obamacare in the continuing resolution bill when it returns to the House, stating, “our goal” is “not to shut down the government.”

On Wednesday,  Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said it is the “right position” for Republicans to take to strip Obamacare of its funding in the continuing resolution (CR), which is a “must-pass” bill to keep the government funded for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. Cruz also said that in sending the amended CR back to the lower chamber, the Republican-dominant “House is going to have another shot at this” to de-fund Obamacare.

Greenberg: Obama Administration Threatened AIG Over Bailout Lawsuit

Posted March 15, 2013

Former American International Group (AIG) CEO Hank Greenberg accused the Obama administration Wednesday of threatening the company not to join a class action lawsuit that he has brought against the federal government over the terms of the 2008 AIG bailout. Minutes of an AIG Board of Directors' meeting in January 2013 appear to support Greenberg's claim.

Frances Bivens, the lawyer who represents the U.S. Treasury in the case, warned AIG's board that if it joined the lawsuit, the company could face "another wave of congressional investigations" and public embarrassment.

Greenberg, who had left AIG by the time of the 2008 financial crisis but remained an AIG shareholder, has consistently argued against the federal bailout. He brought the lawsuit on behalf of shareholders who were shortchanged when the government forced AIG to accept what he argues were unfavorable terms.

Amnesty Backfire

Posted March 15, 2013

The Obama administration has rearrested several immigrants it had released prior to the budget sequestration, according to the Washington Times.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement director John Morton testified to Congress that his agency released 10 “level one” offenders and has gone out and brought four of them back in. He said the other six are non-violent.

Sen. Schumer Quietly Adds Extreme Measures to Gun Sellers Bill

Posted March 15, 2013

Ostensibly, Schumer's bill is meant to change current laws to require that all firearm sales initiate a background check on the buyer before the sale is finalized. Currently, private citizens are exempt from performing background checks when they sell guns to other private citizens.

Though the original bill introduced was a shortened version, the New York Senator has since added new amendments to his bill that raise concerns for gun rights advocates.

Schumer's new Section 202 will make it illegal for an unlicensed person to transfer a gun to any other non-licensed person. The law would require that a licensed gun seller perform an NICS check and fill out a Form 4473 before a transfer would be legal.

Exceptions include transfers from husband to wife or immediate family, short-term transfers for hunting purposes (if the owner is present), or at a shooting range or for firearms instruction.

Section 202 also sets maximum fees for the paperwork and demands that the FFL keep the paperwork during the length of the transfer.

Caddell Unloads on 'Racketeering' GOP Consultants

Posted March 15, 2013

"When you have the Chief of Staff of the Republican National Committee and the political director of the Romney campaign, and their two companies get $150 million at the end of the campaign for the 'fantastic' get-out-the-vote program...some of this borders on RICO [the 1970 Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act] violations," Caddell told the crowd. "It's all self dealing going on. I think it works on the RICO thing. They’re in the business of lining their pockets."

"The Republican Party," Caddell continued, "is in the grips of what I call the CLEC--the consultant, lobbyist, and establishment complex." Caddell described CLEC as a self serving interconnected network of individuals and organizations interested in preserving their own power far more than they're interested in winning elections.

"Just follow the money," Caddell told a rapt audience. "It’s all there in the newspaper. The way it works is this--ever since we centralized politics in Washington, the House campaign committee and the Senate campaign committee,  they decide who they think should run. You hire these people on the accredited list [they say to candidates] otherwise we won't give you money. You hire my friend or else."

Financial corruption is a key component of the current process, according to Caddell. "There's money passing under the table on both parties. Don’t kid yourself...If you can’t see racketeering in front of you, God save you."

Caddell criticized the RNC's planned announcement on Monday of the RNC's Growth and Opportunity Project report, which he dismissed as "this whitewash...being produced at the RNC. You can not have the people who failed responsible for finding the solution."

Caddell predicted that the Republican Party, unless it became the anti-establishment, anti-Washington party, would become extinct, like the 19th century Whig Party. "These people [in the consulting-lobbying-establishment complex] are doing business for themselves. They are a part of the Washington establishment. These people don’t want to have change."

The 2010 takeover of Congress by the Republicans, Caddell said, "was not engineered by the Washington Republican establishment. They [the establishment] then took that victory and threw it away."

When an audience member asked Caddell why he, a Democrat, was offering Republicans advice that would help them beat his own party, his response was met with huge applause. "I'm not a fan of Barack Obama," Caddell said. "My first allegiance is to my country. I have paid a huge price, and when I watch you people screwing up I'm offended."

Louie Gohmert, CPAC Superstar

Posted March 15, 2013

“I am not cut out for this,” says one of Representative Louie Gohmert’s staffers. We’re caught in the middle of an hour-and-a-half-long Gohmert feeding frenzy that started as soon as the Texas Republican set foot on Radio Row, here at the Conservative Political Action Conference. It finally wraps when his staffers pry him away from the last reporters and dash him back to the Hill.

CPAC sometimes feels like the Grammy Awards of movement conservatism. And if that’s the case, then Gohmert is Willie Nelson — accented and outspoken. And faced with hordes of fans, he’s enamoring. It’s not just a CPAC thing — his staffers tell me that they’re always juggling media invites — but here, Gohmert might as well be Elvis. Nobody doesn’t want a piece of Louie.

He descends into the fray after concluding a panel called “Too Many American Wars?” Gohmert’s on-stage take: “Benefit your friends, make sure your enemies suffer from being your enemies.” People seem to have liked it, and right now, Gohmert is benefitting his friends. His first stop is the Tea Party News Network’s booth, where host Scottie Nell Hughes, a big-haired blonde in a hot-pink wrap dress and sky-high leopard-print heels who’s just finished interviewing Newt Gingrich, tells him, “You’re more of a diva than I am!”

Dianne Feinstein Battles Ted Cruz in Heated Senate Showdown Over Guns: ‘I’m Not a 6th Grader’

Posted March 15, 2013

Senators Ted Cruz and Dianne Feinstein during a Senate Judiciary Hearing on Thursday got into heated exchange while discussing the California congresswoman’s proposed ban on so-called “assault” weapons.

“The question that I would pose to the senior senator from California is,” Cruz said, referring to Feinstein, “Would she deem it consistent with the Bill of Rights for Congress to engage in the same endeavor that we are contemplating doing with the Second Amendment in the context of the First or Fourth Amendment, namely, would she consider it constitutional for Congress to specify that the First Amendment shall apply only to the following books and shall not apply to the books that Congress has deemed outside the protection of the Bill of Rights?”

“Likewise, would she think that the Fourth Amendment’s protection against searches and seizures could properly apply only to the following specified individuals and not to the individuals that Congress has deemed outside the protection of the Bill of Rights?” he added.

Apparently, Sen. Feinstein was not amused with the Texas senator’s line of questioning.

“I’m not a sixth grader,” said responded. “Senator, I’ve been on this committee for 20 years. I was a mayor for nine years. I walked in, I saw people shot. I’ve looked at bodies that have been shot with these weapons. I’ve seen the bullets that implode. In Sandy Hook, youngsters were dismembered. Look, there are other weapons.”

“I’ve been up — I’m not a lawyer, but after 20 years I’ve been up close and personal to the Constitution. I have great respect for it. This doesn’t mean that weapons of war and the Heller decision clearly points out three exceptions, two of which are pertinent here.”

“And so I — you know, it’s fine you want to lecture me on the Constitution. I appreciate it. Just know I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve passed on a number of bills. I’ve studied the Constitution myself. I am reasonably well educated, and I thank you for the lecture,” she added.

Grassroots coalition calls on Perry, Dewhurst, & Straus to lead the way on a new vision for roads

Posted March 14, 2013

Sensible bills should not be held hostage to promote special interests, more road debt, tax hikes, and budget-busting tolls that will only burden small businesses, families, seniors, and young adults on limited income!

TURF Lobby Day with Terri Hall(Austin, TX, March 12, 2013) - On Tuesday morning, Texans from across the state converged at the capitol to stress the need for Texas Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, Speaker Joe Straus, and House and Senate budget writers to prevent the most fiscally sound, long-term road funding solutions from being held hostage to more tolls, debt, and tax hikes.

Activist leaders Terri Hall (TURF) and JoAnn Fleming (TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee Chair and Grassroots America director) sounded the alarm to Texans that soon every major road will be tolled, and foreign corporations can take over our  roadways, driving up the cost of daily travel with unfettered tolling.

"Texans don't take kindly to unelected boards and commissions raising taxes on them, and that is just what these toll agencies can and will do if we don't change course now," warned TURF's founder and director, Terri Hall.
