AWOL: Meet The GOP Senators Who Refused to Stand With Rand

Posted March 7, 2013

It's time to name names.

Yesterday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) embarked upon a historic filibuster in an attempt to coax the White House to answer a basic and fundamental constitutional question that affects every American's 5th Amendment rights. He was joined by thirteen other Republican Senators as well as one Democrat.

While the stand for liberty and government accountability was taking place on Capitol Hill, a handful of Republican Senators were having an off-the-record dinner with President Barack Obama.  Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) notebaly attended the dinner wiht the President and then made their way to the Senate Chambers and participated in the filibuster.

Republican members of the House of Representatives walked down the hall to support Sen. Paul.  Rep. Louie Gohmert even brought the weary senator some chocolate bars and cough drops.

But what about the Republican senators who had something better to do Wednesday night?

Dramatic Rand Paul filibuster ends as petitioners demand answers from WH about domestic drone strikes

Posted March 7, 2013

As Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul staged a dramatic, rare speaking filibuster to protest President Barack Obama’s apparent belief that he has the constitutional authority to assassinate American citizens within the United States, citizens also began demanding a response from the White House though the administration’s online “We the People” petition website.

Paul yielded the Senate floor to a round of applause at approximately 12:39 a.m. EST on Thursday morning, ending his nearly-13 hour filibuster of the Senate’s confirmation vote of White House adviser John Brennan to be the director of the CIA.

A petition echoing Paul’s request, however, was started on the White House website late Wednesday evening, and rapidly gained traction.

RebRANDing: New GOP Guard Stands Up for Constitution

Posted March 7, 2013

On Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) served notice to both the Republican establishment and to the Democrat-Media Complex: conservatism isn’t gone. It’s not even on vacation. The new wave of conservatives is here, and they know how to play the game.

Paul’s performance signaled a groundshift in the power base of the Republican Party. While establishment figures like Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsay Graham (R-SC) were dining with President Obama, Paul was drawing the nation’s attention from the floor of the Senate with his invocation of the most basic of all Senate rights: the right to be heard, in the fashion of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. And because Paul picked an issue of transparency – and an issue on which both left and right generally agree that lines must be drawn – he had few detractors, even though Democrats stonewalled his proposed resolutions attempting to draw lines regarding drone strikes.

Leaked email adds fuel to claims White House playing politics over impact of cuts

Posted March 7, 2013

A leaked email from an Agriculture Department field officer adds fuel to claims President Obama's political strategy is to make the billions in recent federal budget cuts as painful as possible to win the public opinion battle against Republicans.

The email, circulated around Capitol Hill, was sent Monday by Charles Brown, a director at the agency’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in Raleigh, N.C. He appears to tell his regional team about a response to his recent question on the amount of latitude he has in making cuts.

According to the partially redacted email, the response came from the Agriculture Department’s budget office and in part states: “However you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.”
The response noted that the administration had already told Congress that the APHIS would “eliminate assistance to producers in 24 states in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture

Arkansas Republican Rep. Tim Griffin said the administration’s response to Brown’s email shows a bid to undermine efforts to replace the cuts, known as sequester, with less onerous ones.

“This email confirms what many Americans have suspected: The Obama administration is doing everything they can to make sure their worst predictions come true and to maximize the pain of the sequester cuts for political gain,” Griffin said in a statement.

Griffin told Fox News on Wednesday that the bosses effectively said, “you can’t do anything that is inconsistent with the negative impact that we’ve told everybody these cuts are going to have.”

Gun Regulation and Confiscation … Believe Us Now?

Posted March 7, 2013

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read a comment made on a blog, Facebook or news story where concerns about gun confiscation are answered with a “You people are idiots! No one is taking anyone’s guns!”; or something similar. Well, a Department of Justice memo was leaked this past week that puts the Administration’s goal of total gun confiscation out in the open. Believe us now?

The Rand Paul Filibuster: A Point Not to be Missed

Posted March 7, 2013

Rand Paul has done a brilliant thing filibustering the President’s appointment to the CIA.

By keeping the filibuster going through prime time, Rand Paul forced ABC, CBS, and NBC — chief sources of news for low information voters — to cover the issue.

Along the way, Rand Paul had help giving him time to rest his voice. Ted Cruz came down a few hours in to give Paul a break. Mike Lee and Jerry Moran came in. Cruz read tweets in support of Paul.

Mark Kirk, who returned to the Senate a short while back after a very bad stroke, came in to support Rand Paul.

Even Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon joined in the filibuster.

Meanwhile, Lindsey Graham and John McCain went to eat dinner with the President. That speaks for itself.

State Dept. Offers Special Two-Year Passports for Transgenders in Transition

Posted March 7, 2013

(CNSNews.com) – The State Department’s website features travel information for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender individuals, including advice on getting a temporary passport if you are a transgender in transition.

"In order to have the passport issued in your new gender, you must submit a physician certificate with your application that validates whether your gender transition is in process or complete," says the State Department.

"If a physician certifies that your transition is in process, you are eligible for a limited validity two-year passport," says the department.

"If a physician certifies that your transition is complete, you are eligible for a full validity ten-year passport," it says.

Google: FBI spying on thousands of users

Posted March 7, 2013

In a Google report released Tuesday, the tech giant revealed that thousands of inquiries have been made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the personal information of its users.

The document, entitled “Transparency Report: Shedding more light on National Security Letters,” was posted by Richard Salgado, the legal director of law enforcement and information security at Google.

“The FBI can seek the ‘name, address, length of service, and local and long distance toll billing records’ of a subscriber to a wire or electronic communications service” by filing a National Security Letter (NSL), the report said. Google has received as many as 4,000 NSLs since 2009, requesting information for as many as 10,000 accounts.

Vote Now at TedCruz.orgVote Now at TedCruz.org: Should the U.S. Send $250 Million to Egypt While Threatening to Cut Vital Services at Home?

Posted March 6, 2013

President Obama says the only way to cut 2.4% from the federal budget is to fire police officers, firefighters, teachers, and air traffic controllers…and yet this week Secretary of State John Kerry announced he’s sending another $250 million in aid to Egypt.

Do you think we should be sending that money to Egypt–without any preconditions–while at the same time threatening to cut vital services at home?

Where do you think that $250 million should go instead?

U.S. Sen. Cruz: Restore Growth First – Defund Obamacare

Posted March 7, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) today released the following statement on his Continuing Resolution amendment to delay funding of Obamacare:

For the last four years, our economy has grown at just 0.8% per year. As a result of this anemic growth, 23 million Americans are struggling to find work, and millions more are being denied a fair opportunity to achieve the American dream.

Economic growth these past four years has been a small fraction of historic levels: since World War II, our economy has averaged 3.3% growth each year. Until economic growth returns, none of our economic problems can be solved. Improving the lives of the middle class, protecting our seniors, empowering people to escape poverty, and reining in the federal debt…all depend on economic growth.

The very first priority of every elected official—Democrat and Republican—should be restoring economic growth, so we can ensure continued strength, prosperity, and opportunity for the next generations.

Obamacare does precisely the opposite. It is already hurting small businesses, reducing the hours Americans are allowed to work, forcing employers to drop coverage, and leading to substantial increases in healthcare premiums—especially for young people. And, if Obamacare is fully implemented, it will create an even further drag on the economy, killing jobs and making it harder for those struggling to climb the economic ladder.

In my view, Obamacare should be fully repealed, and I have introduced legislation to do so.

At a minimum, however, it should not be implemented at time when our economy is struggling so mightily, at a time when its implementation could push us into a full recession.

Therefore, when the Senate votes on the Continuing Resolution, I intend to offer a “Restore Growth First” amendment which will delay funding of Obamacare. I believe we should continue to delay such funding at least until economic growth returns to historic averages, and I intend to object to consideration of any Continuing Resolution that does not include a vote to delay funding of Obamacare.

Last quarter, our economy grew just 0.1%. Getting growth back, getting Americans back to work, should be our top priority, and we should all roll up our sleeves and work in a bipartisan way to get that done.

Cruz: Defund Obamacare through spending bill

Posted March 7, 2013

Texas Republican Sen.Ted Cruz declared Wednesday that he will reject any government spending bill that does not directly cut off funds to the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama’s signature piece of legislation.

Cruz said “he will offer an amendment to delay the flow of funds to implement the healthcare law when the Senate takes up a continuing resolution to fund the federal government,” the Hill reports.

“I believe we should continue to delay such funding at least until economic growth returns to historic averages, and I intend to object to consideration of any continuing resolution that does not include a vote to delay funding of Obamacare,” Cruz said in a statement.

We Have Ted Cruz's List: Harvard Law Really Is Littered with Communists

Posted March 6, 2013

It turns out Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was correct when he claimed Harvard Law School had significant numbers of what might reasonably be called "communists."

Anyone who knows the Ivy League knows the question shouldn't be, Who at Harvard is Marxist? but Who at Harvard isn't Marxist?

Cruz, a U.S. senator for almost two months now, made the offending statement in a speech almost three years ago.  He described Barack Obama as "the most radical" president "ever to occupy the Oval Office."

Obama "would have made a perfect president of Harvard Law School" because "there were fewer declared Republicans in the faculty when we were there than communists!" said Cruz.  "There was one Republican. But there were 12 who would say they were Marxists who believed in the communists' overthrowing the United States government."

No more golf for Obama until White House tours resume, Gohmert says

Posted March 6, 2013

In response to an announcement by the White House that it will end public tours due to sequestration, Rep. Louie Ghomert, R-Texas, filed an amendment  to the House GOP’s six-month continuing resolution that would prevent President Obama from using federal dollars to go golfing, a favorite pastime of his, until the tours are reinstated.

Gohmert’s amendment to H.R. 933 states:
“None of the funds made available by a division of this Act may be used to transport the president to or from a golf course until public tours of the White House resume.”

(Austin, TX) Late last week, Giovanni Capriglione filed HB 1938 which will ensure college students in Texas receive an education in American & Texas history prior graduating with their 4 years degree.

“The current language, requiring history to be taught to higher education students, is vague and doesn’t ensure actual American & Texas History is learned. If taxpayer dollars are going toward the education of students such requirements should be clearer."  commented Representative Capriglione.

A recent report on American History classes at the state's flagship universities showed an overemphasis on race, class, or gender that results in a less-than-comprehensive picture of U.S. History. HB 1938 re-enforces the initial intent of the 1971 law requiring students to earn six credits in American History.

“It’s imperative that we continue a culture of appreciating the history of our state and nation. Texas college students should receive a thorough overview of these courses prior to graduation.” the representative concluded.

Giovanni has been married for 12 years to his wife Elisa and has three children. More information regarding Giovanni can be found at http://www.votegiovanni.com/.

Ted Cruz and His Enemies

Posted March 6, 2013

In a column in the New Republic last month, John B. Judis laid into newly elected Senator Ted Cruz of Texas for asking Chuck Hagel, during his confirmation hearings to become secretary of defense, about his relationship with Chas Freeman. Hagel was chairman of the Atlantic Council and Freeman served on its board. Hagel brushed aside the question during his Senate hearing but did call Freeman a “respected public servant for this nation.” Freeman, you may recall, was Obama’s pick to chair the National Intelligence Council in 2009 but withdrew his name after controversy ensued over past statements. Freeman later blamed “the Israel lobby”—an unfortunate descriptor Hagel is also fond of—for torpedoing his nomination.

For having the temerity to ask Hagel about his relationship with Freeman, Cruz was reminiscent of Joe McCarthy, Judis declared: “Americans who worry about democracy need to keep on [Cruz]. He is a not dumb drunk [sic] like McCarthy.” Recall that one of the reasons Chas Freeman’s nomination faltered was that he had defended the Chinese government’s slaughter of students and activists in Tiananmen Square in unequivocal terms. To sum up, Cruz is a threat to democracy for daring to ask Hagel about his “respected” colleague who happened to defend a Communist state that has slaughtered its democratic activists. Got it.
