Dr. Stuart Spitzer for Texas House District 4

Dr. Stuart Spitzer
Republican candidate for the Texas House of Representatives in the 2014 Primary - District 4

I was born in Athens, Texas.  I lived there for the first 19 years of my life, and my parents live there to this day.  I am a graduate of Athens High School and Trinity Valley Community College.  I have a Bachelors Degree from Baylor and a Medical Doctor Degree from UT southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

I met and married my wife Shari during residency, and we’ve enjoyed 16 great years together.  Not only is she a part-time physician, but also an incredible mom to our two kids, Lilly (age 13), and Luke (age 11). My children and I are truly blessed to have her in our lives.

My parents, along with the good people of Henderson County, taught me a lot growing up. If I was in trouble at school or church, I was in trouble at home. As a kid, my friends and I had the run of the neighborhood on our bikes until the streetlights came on. I worked mowing baseball fields during the day and umpiring softball games at night.  Late summers I would help my grandfather plow black dirt cotton fields and hunt and fish on his ranch in Central Texas. From this upbringing, I learned respect for God, the outdoors, others, and a hard day’s work.

After 12 years of college, medical school, and residency, Shari and I returned to Athens and I practiced surgery there for 6 years. We had our 2 children there and invested our time and values in the lives of several youth who are now adults and have their own families.  We moved to Kaufman over 8 years ago mostly so I could have more time to spend with my family.  It is still a struggle to find the time I need for work, kids, church, all the busyness of life, but life is good.

The people of District 4  have been my mentors and friends.  We share the same hopes and dreams for ourselves and our children.  Most want to preserve the good life we have.  We want strong community where hard work, respect and character are valued.  I have tried to live my life as a servant and place others first.  These are my values, these are our values, and I want to take these values to Austin.

Stuart Spitzer on the Issues

The business of government is to empower private business through fair, predictable, open tax codes and regulations. The less regulation and taxes we have, the better private business will be. Business should succeed or fail based on the business model, financial model and the ability to succeed in an open marketplace. Its relationship to government should never be a factor. Unfortunately, there are those who believe government should tax all to give to some. This is crony capitalism. That is why businesses hire lobbyists and give to legislators. I am for free market capitalism. History has proven it is the best system for a prosperous and free society.

As we are a nation of immigrants, I am for legal immigration. I am for assimilation into the American culture. America is a melting pot and not a multicultural nation. My grandfather spoke German when he went to first grade, but he learned in English. The voting ballots were in English. Our family is not German American, we are Americans. On the other hand, illegal immigration has brought chaos to our hospitals, schools, and job sites. It costs billions of dollars in direct and indirect costs. I see these costs in this district as a physician, father and taxpayer. At a minimum the state should stop all inducements to come here illegally. Elimination of sanctuary cities, bilingual education and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants would be a good start. Even these common sense measures have not been passed despite the fact that Republicans have had a majority in the Texas House for years. I would support these measures.

Human life is sacred. It cannot be created by man, and it should not be destroyed. Life begins at the moment of conception and ends with natural death. Therefore, I am against abortion, euthanasia, and embryonic stem cell research. I support and will defend traditional East Texas values.

Small Government

Any decrease in the size of government gives every Texan more money. Freedom is the ability to spend our own money as we wish and to be free from government intrusion on our lives and families. Any increase in government transfers our money and our freedoms to Austin. I believe in a smaller, more efficient, and more open form of government.

“Politician” has become a bad word. This is sad because they should be public servants with the public as their main concern. Too often they say words that will get them elected and ignore the people they were elected to represent. The Texas Constitution demands a Republic. This is the form of government where the elected should represent their district to the betterment of the district and the state. Personal gain should have no place in a Republic.

Term limits

It is in vogue today in conservative circles to favor term limits. I think this is largely unnecessary if the voters would perform two simple functions. The first one is to elect candidates with the character to act as servants, those who will serve and then go home to live under the laws they passed. The second function of the voters is to vote the political class out. By doing so, the power remains with the people and not with another government law.

Education is critically important for Texas to continue to lead the United States and the world. Federal spending, mandates, and required testing are hurting the students by tying the hands of our teachers. Education should be more open to teach each child at his or her own level.

Marriage is the single most important institution for maintaining our culture and rearing children. It may not always be a reality in every situation, but it is still the best and as such, it deserves respect and support. I would not support any measure weakening marriage.

Health Care

We are called morally, ethically and even Biblically to help those sick and in need. Our current system does a poor job of doing this. Reform equals something other than more money sent into the same system. Reform limits federal strings on federal money. True reform gives patients control of their health care and takes control away from insurance companies and government bureaucracies.

Gun Rights

I believe in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as written. There are three types of gun owners:  Citizens, Government and criminals. Gun regulations only restrict the citizens and thus are unconstitutional and unneeded by their very nature. I am “A” rated by both the National Rifle Association and the Texas State Rifle Association.
