Hinkle: Commit any felonies lately?

Posted July 8, 2013

Elizabeth Daly went to jail over a case of bottled water.

According to the Charlottesville Daily Progress, shortly after 10 p.m. April 11, the University of Virginia student bought ice cream, cookie dough and a carton of LaCroix sparkling water from the Harris Teeter grocery store at the popular Barracks Road Shopping Center. In the parking lot, a half-dozen men and a woman approached her car, flashing some kind of badges. One jumped on the hood. Another drew a gun. Others started trying to break the windows.

Daly understandably panicked. With her roommate in the passenger seat yelling “Go, go, go!” Daly drove off, hoping to reach the nearest police station. The women dialed 911. Then a vehicle with lights and sirens pulled them over, and the situation clarified: The people who had swarmed Daly’s vehicle were plainclothes agents of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The agents had thought the sparkling water was a 12-pack of beer.

Lawsuit: Police seize homes, arrest owners to investigate neighbor

Posted July 8, 2013

A family is suing the city of Henderson, Nevada for violating their Third Amendment rights — the constitutional prohibition against quartering soldiers in a private home during peacetime without the owner’s consent.

The Mitchell family says that’s essentially what happened when Henderson police allegedly arrested them for refusing to let officers use their homes for a “tactical advantage” in a domestic violence investigation into a neighbor, according to an official complaint.

Police officers contacted Anthony Mitchell on July 10, 2011, with a request to use his house as a lookout while investigating his neighbor. When Mitchell told police that he did not wish to be involved, the complaint alleges, police decided they would use the residence anyway.

California prison doctors sterilized women to cut welfare costs

Posted July 8, 2013

California prison doctors sterilized almost 150 women over a four-year period because they didn’t want the state to have to provide welfare funding to any children they might have in the future, one of the top doctors admitted this week.

California taxpayers spent $147,460 on the procedures between 1997 and 2010. ”Over a 10-year period, that isn’t a huge amount of money,” Dr. James Heinrich, the OB-GYN at Valley State Prison for Women, told the Center for Investigative Reporting, “compared to what you save in welfare paying for these unwanted children – as they procreated more.”

Heinrich’s argument recalls progressive Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who declared “three generations of imbeciles are enough” in the opinion he wrote for the majority in Buck vs Bell (1927), in which the Supreme Court ruled that women could be forcibly sterilized.

Video: Abortion Supporters Chant "Hail Satan" at Pro-Life Women

Posted July 3, 2013

For a few hours yesterday afternoon, I thought wishing rape upon pro-life legislators and their families would represent rock bottom for the abortion zealots who've descended upon the Texas capitol to picket in favor of late-term abortion.  And then I heard about this.  There are no words:

Even Democrats Oppose Wendy Davis

Posted July 3, 2013 ~ Konni Burton

It's not every day I say "I agree with a Democrat", but today is that day.

One of the bright lights of Senator Davis's filibuster, followed by a mob hijacking of the democratic process, was the voice of reason that came from Senator Eddie Lucio. Now I'm sure as a State Senator I will have serious disagreements with Senator Lucio on certain policies but on this issue we stand together.
