Rubio’s record speaks volumes

Posted May 28, 2013

The tea party patriots who helped propel Republican Marco Rubio into the U.S. Senate are taking a second look at his record in the Florida House in light of his support for the Gang of Eight immigration reform bill. What they’re finding isn’t necessarily what they’d been led to believe.

It seems that every chance he gets, the junior senator from Florida is on a news program, touting the Senate’s bipartisan immigration proposal, which prompted conservative pundit Ann Coulter to take a closer look at the legislation and ask, “If Rubio’s amnesty is so great, why is he lying?

This in turn led The Daily Caller to examine Rubio’s record when he was speaker of the Florida House and speak with his present and former colleagues.

“Rubio blocked any efforts to deal with the problems of illegal immigration on the local or state level,” one former South Florida politician told The Daily Caller.

Byron York: Immigration could spoil Marco Rubio's presidential chances

Posted May 28, 2013

"Over the last three months, Marco Rubio's name and face and voice have been so attached to the comprehensive immigration bill that it has virtually killed any enthusiasm among Republicans in Iowa for a Rubio presidential candidacy," said GOP State Central Committee member Jamie Johnson. "Most Republicans here now see Rubio as the amnesty candidate."

"Rubio seems to be so damaged it will be very difficult for him to recover here in Iowa," said Rep. Steve King. "My perspective is that the immigration issue will sort Republican candidates."

"Rubio has hurt himself immeasurably with his support of the current immigration bill," said Sioux City conservative radio host Sam Clovis. "The rule of law still trumps all the feel-good aspects of the bill."

"Immigration will be a separator issue, for sure," said Chuck Laudner, a longtime GOP activist allied with King and an influential supporter of Santorum in 2012.

McCain meets with rebel leaders in Syria

Posted May 28, 2013

Sen. John McCain (R) traveled to war-torn Syria on Monday to meet with rebel leaders, a spokesman for the Arizona senator confirmed to The Hill.

McCain's visit makes him the highest-ranking U.S. official to enter the country since its civil war began two years ago.

According to the Daily Beast, which first reported the visit, McCain met with Gen. Salem Idris, the leader of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army, and spent a few hours in the country after entering through Turkey.

McCain, a leading critic of the Obama administration's policy towards Syria, has been calling for the U.S. to provide lethal aid to opposition forces seeking the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Though liberals call him a ‘LINO,’ Ted Cruz founded Harvard Latino Law Review

Posted May 28, 2013

Although the left-wing press and Democratic former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson are busily trying to depict him as a fake Latino, Sen. Ted Cruz has long been involved with the Latino community. The Texas Republican, who won a Senate seat last November, helped found Harvard Law School’s Latino Law Review and worked with then-Gov. George W. Bush to reach out to Latinos in Texas.

The twenty-four-year-old Cruz — then going by “Rafael E. Cruz” — was listed as a “general editor” in the Latino Law Review’s inaugural issue in Fall 1994. The name appears to have been just his formal name. “Students knew him as ‘Ted,’” Alan Dershowitz, a professor of Cruz’s at Harvard, told TheDC.

The Texas Budget - The Dirty Deed is Done

Posted May 28, 2013

The dirty deed is done.  The TX Legislature passed both HB 1025 (raid on RDF) and SB1 (budget bill).

The Conservative Budget Coalition will discuss sending a public call to Gov. Perry to veto the bill. I will let you know what is decided.  We will need to get calls going to the Gov's office when it opens Tuesday @ 8 AM.

The Senate passed SJR1 - constitutional amendment for water that will open up the RDF to transfer to a State Infrastructure Bank for water without counting toward the constitutional spending cap.  The legislature is deeming this to be so because they changed the definition of "busting the spending cap."   We must defeat this in November.

I have watched this bunch make fun of David Simpson and Van Taylor all day.  They are the only ones who dared go to the back mic to try to stop the establishment ground game.  David Simpson and Van Taylor spoke against the spending, and Phil King rose to say he would vote against SB1 and HB 1025, but he made sure to distance himself from David Simpson as he did so.

The first thing the House did today was suspend the rules and go outside the bounds to speed up the clock.  It is now 8 PM real time, but they are calling it 11:50 PM.  They did this to keep folks like Simpson & Van Taylor from "talking a bill to death" (filibuster in Federal terms) and pushing them past the midnight deadline.  Aren't you proud of that kind of conduct?

We must fire some of these people in 2014.  They are going to destroy Texas.

Texas Passes Bill to Train Teachers as Armed Marshals

Posted May 28, 2013

Texas legislators have sent a bill to Governor Rick Perry that allows schools to train and maintain teachers as "armed marshals" on campuses.

The bill, which had already passed the Texas house, enjoyed a bipartisan passage of 28-3 in the Texas senate.

According to the Associated Press, the bill enjoyed the strong support of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who "pushed lawmakers to help school districts provide teachers or other employees with special weapons and tactical response training." Dewhurst's pleas were echoed by smaller school districts that could not afford to hire police and other security forces for their schools.

Under the bill, trained teachers would keep a firearm in a lockbox "within immediate reach." It allows one armed marshal per 400 students and contains provisions to hide the name of that marshal from public record, to keep him or her from being purposefully targeted in an attack.

Update: Governor Perry has Vetoed Texas SB 346 - Justice Don Willett and Senator Dan Patrick Respond

Posted May 28, 2013

Statement from Texas Governor Rick Perry:

“Freedom of association and freedom of speech are two of our most important rights enshrined in the Constitution. My fear is that SB 346 would have a chilling effect on both of those rights in our democratic political process. While regulation is necessary in the administration of Texas political finance laws, no regulation is tolerable that puts anyone’s participation at risk or that can be used by any government, organization or individual to intimidate those who choose to participate in our process through financial means.”

“At a time when our federal government is assaulting the rights of Americans by using the tools of government to squelch dissent it is unconscionable to expose more Texans to the risk of such harassment, regardless of political, organizational or party affiliation. I therefore veto SB 346.”

Legislators, lobbyist relatives create questions over families and ‘ties that bind’

Posted May 24, 2013

As a hardly dynamic 83rd Texas legislature nears its regular term’s end, the familial connections of legislators and lobbyists are an interesting angle to keep in mind for the post-session analyses that invariably occur.

In February, Texas Tribune’s Ross Ramsey provided an overview of lawmaker/lobbyist ties. He noted how in the state capital environment where “moving from the Legislature to the lobby — and, sometimes, the other way — is unremarkable, it is also common to find the relatives of lawmakers working with state government.”

With education a hot topic this session, the intersection of legislators, lobbyists, family and education industry interests becomes all the more noteworthy.

Grisham prosecution complicated by video depicting bullying?

Posted May 24, 2013

…government is the servant and not the master of the people…The people…do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know...Chapter 552.01, Open Record, Texas Govt. Code

Temple – These people are wrong, and they know it. It shows.
City and County officials hereabouts, police and prosecutors, judges and lawyers, are extremely fearful that the people will see that.

A soldier – a Master Sergeant, a native of the city and a 15-year veteran of the Profession of Arms – is busy showing all this to We The People, his neighbors, in an effort to make us aware that, as a material fact of our lives, most of what passes as the official record of the actions of police and lawyers who work for We The People is extremely murky – in fact, downright abstruse, often completely unavailable.

M/Sgt. C.J. Grisham is using a video camera, a computer, an assault rifle and a pistol to demonstrate his point. He furthermore wants to burn it in by using the official record of arrest, the all-important affidavit of probable cause, dispatcher tapes and dashcam video to memorialize in an appearance in County Court-at-Law, that, though it’s not against the law to carry a rifle in this state, it’s against the law to upset people when you do it…

Konni Burton ~ Why I'm Running for Texas State Senate

Posted May 22, 2013

Our government is out of control. It is neither fiscally responsible, nor limited and the rule of law is flagrantly ignored. As a grassroots activist, I’ve been in the trenches trying to educate others on the unsustainable U.S. government debt – $16,827,427,184,539.43 (and climbing) and how our personal liberties contract as government grows. Unfortunately, what I learned along the way is that this fight is not just limited to Washington. Legislators at the state and local level act too much like their D.C. counterparts.

Because of this, I have worked hard at the state level as well. I have been boots on the ground for conservative candidates – working to get them elected to the State House and Senate. I have also worked with many conservative grassroots groups to activate and mobilize others and am on my second legislative session with the Tea Party Caucus Advisory Committee that travels to Austin on a regular basis. I’ve seen first-hand how legislators, on both sides of the aisle, grow government bureaucracies, while ignoring our state’s long term fiscal problems. We need strong public servants who will champion true reform and stand on principle. We must stop our state government from going down the same path as Washington D.C.
