Sen. Ted Cruz This Debate is About One Thing -- The Debt Ceiling

Democrats Use McCain Comments to Paint GOP as Obstructionist

Posted May 24, 2013

Senate Democrats are looking to paint a recent Republican fracas between Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) as further evidence of an obstructionist GOP whose recalcitrance is bogging down budget negotiations.

Schiff: We're Heading For A Crisis
Worse Than 2007

Posted May 24, 2013

Washington is engaged in a massive "campaign" to make Americans believe the economy is in recovery.  But in reality the United States is at the brink of a devastating economic crash that will cause catastrophic market losses and impoverish millions.

That's according to Peter Schiff, the best-selling author and CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, who delivered his frightening warning to investors in a recent interview on CCTV.

"The problem with politicians is they don't want to level with the voters and tell them how bad the economy really is and what the cure for the disease is," Schiff said.

The "disease" Schiff refers to is a toxic combination of our massive $16.4 trillion debt and the Fed's continued devaluing of the dollar through its controversial 7-year long "easing" program.

The Fed is currently purchasing $85 billion a month in Treasury and mortgage bonds, a form of stimulus.

President Obama and like-minded politicians claim this stimulus has pushed the economy forward, boosting GDP and keeping inflation low.

But Schiff says "it's another lie."

Letter from Gainesville TEA Party to Gang of 8 Senators on Immigration

Posted May 24, 2013

The resolution of our immigration policies is of utmost importance if we are to preserve the sovereignty of our great nation. After much research and discussion we have some commentary that is pertinent and should have a positive impact on what has become quite a divisive issue.

Firstly, immigration should be viewed through two perspectives, political impact and social policy. When one considers the real possibility of illegal immigrants obtaining the legal right to vote, or the also real possibility of voter fraud, then the number of illegal immigrants becomes very important. Protection of our citizens from fraudulent voting is imperative as is ensuring that obtaining legal voting status is not frivolously granted. When considering social policy it also becomes imperative to include tight safeguards to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining subsidized benefits including public schooling.

Obama's Energy Secretary Says Climate Change Not Debatable

Posted May 24, 2013

Ernest Moniz, Barack Obama’s new Secretary of Energy, is making it clear there is no room for dissent regarding climate change. Speaking to his department’s employees after he was sworn in, Moniz said, “Let me make it very clear that there is no ambiguity in terms of the scientific basis calling for a prudent response on climate change. I am not interested in debating what is not debatable. There is plenty to debate as we try and move forward on our climate agenda.”

There it is, ladies and gentlemen, another intransigent pronouncement from the Obama Administration.

Moniz also slowed down any attempt by U.S. companies to export liquefied natural gas (LNG), which would benefit the economy. In Europe and Asia, prices for LNG are high, and selling LNG to those continents could create thousands of jobs. But Moniz is holding up roughly 20 applications to sell LNG to countries that do not have free trade agreements with the U.S.

US Admits Four Americans Killed by Drones

Posted May 23, 2013

Today, the United States formally acknowledged killing four American citizens with drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan.

Attorney General Eric Holder disclosed in a letter the administration had killed Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical Muslim cleric in a September 2011 drone strike in Yemen.

The letter also said that the United States had killed three other Americans: Samir Khan, who was killed in the same strike; Mr. Awlaki’s son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, who was also killed in Yemen; and Jude Mohammed, who was killed in a strike in Pakistan.

Mr. Holder wrote "These individuals were not specifically targeted by the United States."

HOUSTON, TX. May 21, 2013 - True the Vote (TTV), the nation's leading voters’ rights organization, filed suit in federal court in Washington today against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), asking the Court to grant its long-awaited tax exempt status and seeking damages for the unlawful actions by the IRS in the processing of its application for exempt status.  ActRight Legal Foundation, a 501(c)3 fundamental rights and public interest law firm represents True the Vote in the lawsuit.
“We’ve been waiting for three years to receive a decision from the IRS about our tax exempt status,” True the Vote President Catherine Engelbrecht said. “After answering hundreds of questions and producing thousands of documents, we’re done waiting. The IRS does not have the power to pocket veto our application. Federal law empowers groups like True the Vote to force a decision in court – which is precisely what we aim to do.”

Spending Up 26%! Texas Legislature Takes Wild Left Turn & Spends like there’s No Tomorrow

Posted May 24, 2013

Take Action in TexasAlert from: JoAnn Fleming, Chairman, TX Legislature's TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee; Executive Director, Grassroots America

The news is bad – very bad. A majority in the Texas House and Senate (yes, a majority of Republicans) have gone on a wild spending spree! We have one last chance to stop it. Please help us kill HB 1025 and SB 1 to force a special session. We believe we can get a more conservative budget when all the focus is on spending.

It is time for YOU to come to the aid of Texas! Call, e-mail, text, FaceBook, and Tweet your state representative as soon as possible! Melt the phone lines starting at 8 AM Friday and call all day! Call your representative’s district offices and Capitol office. Tell him/her you do not support the budget and you support a special session to get it right. Ask them to vote down HB 1025 & SB 1.  Be firm and employ the Golden Rule.  Yelling and cursing doesn't make them hear you, in fact, it can have the opposite effect.

To find your state representative click here.
For good measure, call your state senator & declare you don’t support the budget, click here.

Call Governor Perry’s office & ask him to veto the budget if it passes! (512) 463-2000

Legislators, lobbyist relatives create questions over families and ‘ties that bind’

Posted May 24, 2013

As a hardly dynamic 83rd Texas legislature nears its regular term’s end, the familial connections of legislators and lobbyists are an interesting angle to keep in mind for the post-session analyses that invariably occur.

In February, Texas Tribune’s Ross Ramsey provided an overview of lawmaker/lobbyist ties. He noted how in the state capital environment where “moving from the Legislature to the lobby — and, sometimes, the other way — is unremarkable, it is also common to find the relatives of lawmakers working with state government.”

With education a hot topic this session, the intersection of legislators, lobbyists, family and education industry interests becomes all the more noteworthy.

Grisham prosecution complicated by video depicting bullying?

Posted May 24, 2013

…government is the servant and not the master of the people…The people…do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know...Chapter 552.01, Open Record, Texas Govt. Code

Temple – These people are wrong, and they know it. It shows.
City and County officials hereabouts, police and prosecutors, judges and lawyers, are extremely fearful that the people will see that.

A soldier – a Master Sergeant, a native of the city and a 15-year veteran of the Profession of Arms – is busy showing all this to We The People, his neighbors, in an effort to make us aware that, as a material fact of our lives, most of what passes as the official record of the actions of police and lawyers who work for We The People is extremely murky – in fact, downright abstruse, often completely unavailable.

M/Sgt. C.J. Grisham is using a video camera, a computer, an assault rifle and a pistol to demonstrate his point. He furthermore wants to burn it in by using the official record of arrest, the all-important affidavit of probable cause, dispatcher tapes and dashcam video to memorialize in an appearance in County Court-at-Law, that, though it’s not against the law to carry a rifle in this state, it’s against the law to upset people when you do it…

Stop the raid of the Rainy Day Fund – SJR1 – Vote NO!

Posted May 23, 2013

Fast-breaking news…we are down to crunch time in the legislature.  Regular session ends Monday.  Please send this out ASAP and call your state representative’s office this morning before 10 AM when the House goes back into session!   The vote on this has been delayed twice.  YOU are making a difference!

Stop the raid of the Rainy Day Fund – SJR1 – Vote NO!  The budget is already up 20% over the last one and now they want to raid the savings account too!

GOP leaders are determined to “bust the spending cap” even if it means enacting yet another gimmick and more smoke and mirrors. This time they are changing the definition of “busting the spending cap.”  This is particularly troubling when the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Speaker all strongly spoke against these tactics before the session began. They are all silent now!

We strongly oppose SJR 1.  Here’s why:

1) We don’t believe the TX Water Development Board is short on tools to finance water projects. The board already has two Texas Water Development Funds; creating another would be an unnecessary expansion of government. Spending money just because the Rainy Day Fund is projected to have $12 B at the end of the next biennium reeks of a Washington DC-like mindset.

2) 94% of Republican Primary Voters in 2012 voted for Ballot Resolution #4 - Limiting any increase in government spending. This garnered even more votes that repealing ObamaCare (93%).

3) SJR 1 weakens limits on spending by allowing the Legislature to always draw Rainy Day Fund money into a State Infrastructure Bank for water spending, but it never ever counts against the spending limit. (General Abbott has already agreed that a draw from RDF is considered to be general revenue and thus counts against the spending cap.)

With the passage of this language, the legislature will once again employ smoke and mirrors to spend more than it should by redefining what they want to do — bust the cap. Changing the definition of “busting the cap” so the lege can bust the cap is not what 94% of Republican voters are expecting.

4) State spending is out of control – no matter how the GOP leadership spins it. When both baseline budgets leave out transportation, water and the proposed tax cut, and still spend 20% more in General Revenue  than last session and are determined to raid the Rainy Day Fund, it’s pretty clear leadership is on a spending spree.

Tell your state representative to resist! For the good of Texas – resist!

Sen. Ted Cruz Refuses to Play the Game: ‘Let Me Be Clear, I Don’t Trust the Republicans’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Wednesday made it crystal clear that he is not in Washington, D.C. to play ball with politicians in either party, especially when it comes to the nation’s out of control debt. In fact, he revealed that he doesn’t trust Republicans or Democrats to do the right thing.

Cruz objects to starting House-Senate budget negations unless Democrats take a debt limit increase off the table. He reiterated his stance on Wednesday, saying he is not willing to put blind trust in his own party.

“The senior senator from Arizona (John McCain) urged this body to trust the Republicans. Let me be clear, I don’t trust the Republicans,” Cruz said on the Senate floor. “And I don’t trust the Democrats.”

Konni Burton ~ Why I'm Running for Texas State Senate

Posted May 22, 2013

Our government is out of control. It is neither fiscally responsible, nor limited and the rule of law is flagrantly ignored. As a grassroots activist, I’ve been in the trenches trying to educate others on the unsustainable U.S. government debt – $16,827,427,184,539.43 (and climbing) and how our personal liberties contract as government grows. Unfortunately, what I learned along the way is that this fight is not just limited to Washington. Legislators at the state and local level act too much like their D.C. counterparts.

Because of this, I have worked hard at the state level as well. I have been boots on the ground for conservative candidates – working to get them elected to the State House and Senate. I have also worked with many conservative grassroots groups to activate and mobilize others and am on my second legislative session with the Tea Party Caucus Advisory Committee that travels to Austin on a regular basis. I’ve seen first-hand how legislators, on both sides of the aisle, grow government bureaucracies, while ignoring our state’s long term fiscal problems. We need strong public servants who will champion true reform and stand on principle. We must stop our state government from going down the same path as Washington D.C.

Texas CSCOPE Liberal Curriculum is DEAD! - Not so Fast, SB 1406 MUST STILL PASS

Posted May 21, 2013 ~ David Bellow

The TESCCC Board has announced that they will be ENDING all CSCOPE lessons.

SB 1406 MUST STILL pass the Texas House

We must NOT let our guard down and the Texas Legislature needs to continue to take action to prevent bad curriculum and online backdoor curriculum from being introduced into Texas schools with no oversight. SB 1406 MUST pass the Texas House. Just because TESCCC is pulling CSCOPE does not mean they cannot try to start it back up in the future. SB 1406 will help prevent this and must pass even though CSCOPE has been pulled. Ginger Russell reports on her website Red Hot Conservative that an email has been sent to Superintendents saaying that CSCOPE will not be completely gone.

CSCOPE to Discontinue Providing ISD Lesson Plans; Other Questions Still Exist

Posted May 21, 2013
In an unexpected move Monday, the day the Texas House was scheduled to vote on placing the controversial CSCOPE curriculum management system under State Board of Education (SBOE) control, Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, announced the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum Collaborative (TESCCC), CSCOPE’s current governing board, has agreed to discontinue production of lesson plans effective Aug. 31.

Per a released statement, Patrick acknowledged receipt of a letter signed by all members of the TESCCC board, a board which comprises the states’ 20 Education Service Center (ESC) executive directors, that outlined plans to notify the 875 CSCOPE school district clients that all lesson plans will be removed from their website on Aug. 31 and that any lessons on hand cannot be used beyond that date.

In a Bold Move, Texas Announces Plans to Eliminate CSCOPE Curriculum Program from Its Schools

Posted May 21, 2013

CSCOPE Education Forum May 25th:

East Texas Tea Parties, lead by the Canton Tea Party is hosting an a public forum on school safety and education. The purpose of this forum is to discuss cost-effective school safety alternatives and the true story of CSCOPE, a curriculum used by 80% of the schools in texas.  Guest Speakers include Mr. Greg Coker, CW4, US Army Retired, founder of the very successful school safety program “Not On My Watch” which is “...a safety and security plan that can be incorporated immediately with very little cost and will be effective if implemented properly. The program offers a common sense approach that is simple and has been proven many times over the years.”

As Towns Say No, Signs of Rising Resistance to Smart Meters

Posted May 20, 2013

BRADY, Tex. — In October, the City Council of this Central Texas town voted unanimously to purchase advanced electric meters, known as smart meters, for the city-owned electric utility. But some residents resisted, and the smart meter vote played a large role in last weekend’s recall of the city’s mayor and the electoral defeat of two council members.

Voters here passed a referendum last weekend to enshrine in the City Charter the right of residents to refuse the installation of smart meters on their property. Sheila Hemphill, an organizer of the effort, called the victory her “San Jacinto.”

Invasion of Privacy and Dereliction of Fiscal Duty

Posted May 20, 2013

This year, Senator John Carona (Dallas) authored a bill (SB 241) that would allow electricity consumers to opt-out of the advanced meters (aka smart meters) without additional fees, but the bill is dead in the senate. This story reads much like the TSA Anti-Groping bill by David Simpson in the 82nd legislative session.

Sen. Ted Cruz’s solution to the IRS: Abolish it

Posted May 20, 2013

The Internal Revenue Service was being dragged through the mud this week, after it came to light that agency had been targeting conservative groups. But Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has a solution to make the scandal all go away: abolish the IRS.

Cruz took to Twitter this week, calling for the IRS to be abolished and for the tax code to be simplified, calling for “fairer” and “flatter” taxes.

A few people on Twitter noted that Cruz’s idea sounded a lot like the “Flat Tax” system proposed by fellow Republican and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

URGENT : PLEASE CALL! - New Texas Donor Disclosure Bill - Removes 501c4 Donor Privacy

Posted May 17, 2013

Call Governor PerryAs you probably know, the Obama Administration has received a great deal of heat and well-deserved criticism for trying to force politically-active 501(c)(4) non-profits to disclose the identity of their donors.

What you may not know is that a Texas bill to accomplish the same thing* is now sitting on Gov. Perry's desk--and he's actually considering signing it.

(*-To be fair, there is at least one difference: the Texas bill specifically exempts labor unions and affiliates.)

Via the Texas Tribune:

SB 346, by state Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, would force tax-exempt, politically active nonprofits that fall under section 501(c)(4) of the tax code — the part that oversees groups involved in “social welfare” — to disclose their donors. The bill, which would affect major political givers on both sides of the aisle, originally passed the Senate 23-6; a day later, led by state Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, senators voted 21-10 to reverse themselves, some saying they hadn’t understood what the bill required. Seliger said at the time that his colleagues had faced heavy lobbying by major political donors to change their votes.

Texas Monthly

The bill in question, SB-346, by Amarillo Republican Kel Seliger, would change the state election code so that 501(c)(4) nonprofits operating in the political realm would be required to disclose their donors, as political action committees (PACs) already must do. On Tuesday, the bill was met with little discussion and passed the chamber with a 23-6 vote. Patrick’s recall resolution cleared the Senate in a 21-10 vote.

Texas Public Radio

From now on political nonprofit groups will have to post any contributions being received from lawmakers or money going towards political campaigns thanks to a bill passed in the Texas Senate and now House.

The bill, authored by Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, and carried in the House by Rep. Charlie Geren, R-River Oaks, would require all political groups or 501.C4 organizations disclose who is bringing the money in and where it is going.

Lex Politico (opinion):

The bill would basically expand the legal definition of “political committee” to capture more groups and require them to report the name, address, and other information with respect to persons who donate more than $1,000 to the group. At first glance, that sounds innocuous. But it is entirely unnecessary given the current definitions in the Election Code.  It would also impose a substantial burden on many nonprofits and chill free speech.

If you believe it's none of the government's business who donates to your non-profit group, you would be well-advised to call Governor Perry NOW and ask him to VETO SB346.  If Governor Perry does not veto the bill, the donor disclosure demands recently made by Obama's IRS will become mandatory under Texas law.
