Manchin says he's working to get another Senate vote on gun background check

Posted April 29, 2013

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin said Sunday he’s not finished with his effort to expand background checks for gun buyers, despite the proposal’s defeat and other key senators appearing to now move beyond the issue.

Manchin told “Fox News Sunday” that he’s going to rework the proposal to get it back to the Senate floor.

"I believe that with all of my heart, and we're going to work this bill,” he told Fox News.

Even Big Labor Unions Drop Support For Obamacare

Posted April 29, 2013

Health Care Politics: As ObamaCare rolls out, some of its biggest backers from labor to D.C. lawmakers are having second thoughts. It's a sign that the idea of ending this national nightmare isn't about to go away.
Late last week, the 22,000-member United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers dropped a bombshell on the Obama administration, not only withdrawing its support for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but also demanding its repeal.

The reason: ObamaCare subsidizes low-paid non-union workers in small companies that don't insure their employees, while leaving union shops with ObamaCare's higher health care costs and a 40% tax on Cadillac plans by 2018. That's a "death warrant" for unions, as the Atlantic's Megan McArdle noted.

Rubio hit hard after inviting comments on immigration bill

Posted April 29, 2013

A visit to the “Help Us Improve the Bill” page shows the senator has posted just 147 out of the 1,100 suggestions he has so far received.  Rubio’s staff is reviewing each one — a wise move, given the emotions that the immigration issue can involve and the tendency of some people to say nasty things on the Internet.  But even after screening for foul language and general content, the suggestions Rubio has so far received are remarkably negative.  Actually, they are overwhelmingly, crushingly negative, criticizing a wide spectrum of issues included in the Gang of Eight bill.  The commenters Rubio has invited to speak really, really, really don’t like what he has done.

“This amnesty bill is awful and you should back away from it as you promised you would,” says the very first suggestion, setting the tone for what is to come.

“Here’s how to improve the bill,” says another. “KILL IT.” “The only way to improve this bill is to chuck it into the garbage can,” says another.  “We cannot believe you are so naive to believe that this bill would work.” “My suggestion is a simple one,” says another.  “Throw out this bill and enforce our current immigration laws.”

“NO, NO, NO,” says yet another.

With Bags of Cash, C.I.A. Seeks Influence in Afghanistan

Posted April 29, 2013

KABUL, Afghanistan — For more than a decade, wads of American dollars packed into suitcases, backpacks and, on occasion, plastic shopping bags have been dropped off every month or so at the offices of Afghanistan’s president — courtesy of the Central Intelligence Agency.

All told, tens of millions of dollars have flowed from the C.I.A. to the office of President Hamid Karzai, according to current and former advisers to the Afghan leader.
“We called it ‘ghost money,’ ” said Khalil Roman, who served as Mr. Karzai’s deputy chief of staff from 2002 until 2005. “It came in secret, and it left in secret.”

Interview: King Vows to 'Pull out the Real Truth' About Pigford

Posted April 29, 2013

Iowa Republican Representative Steve King has been sounding the alarm about fraud in the Pigford black farmers' settlement for close to a decade and has been ruthlessly attacked by settlement advocates as well as nearly every media outlet that covered the story.

When the April 26h edition of the New York Times broke a front-page story about fraud in the settlements that also revealed new details about the direct involvement of President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, it was a major development in the multi-billion dollar scandal and signaled the beginning of a new era of investigation into Pigford.

Breitbart News spoke exclusively with the tenacious congressman who also strongly hinted that he would call for hearings into Pigford and the other politically motivated farmers' settlements.

No Union Label on Twinkie Return

Posted April 29, 2013

Buried amid the generally gloomy news last week was a development that is a true cause for celebration. By July, the Twinkie, and other favorite Hostess brands will return to store shelves. Two investment companies bought assets of the bankrupt snack company and plan to re-open four plants and hire 1,500 workers in the coming weeks. Labor unions, however, will not be invited back.

McCain, Schumer Say Gun Control Will Get Another Vote This Year

Posted April 26, 2013

In comments made on April 25, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) both said they were saddened gun control didn't pass on April 17 but assured reporters the measures would be brought up for another vote some time this year.

"I think we will bring the bill back before the end of the year... lots of Senators who thought it was safe to vote against it [on April 17] because of the intensity [pro-gun groups] are not so sure anymore," Schumer said.

Schumer said the intensity for gun control has increased since the failed vote for gun control legislation, and he thinks Americans are now "intense" in their desire for more gun control.

GOP Bill Seeks to Cut Back Government Ammo Purchases

Posted April 26, 2013

AMMO Act would limit ammo buying, storing for non-Pentagon departments and agencies

Senate and House Republicans are set to introduce a joint bill Friday that would significantly limit the amount of ammunition that federal agencies are permitted to purchase and stockpile over the next six months.

The bill, authored by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R., Okla.) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R., Okla.), comes as numerous lawmakers across Capitol Hill have expressed concern that certain federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), are stockpiling high quantities of ammunition.

DHS, for instance, has placed two-years worth of ammunition, or nearly 247 million rounds, in its inventory.

Inhofe said these agencies must provide greater “transparency and accountability” over its ammo stockpiles so that the public can learn about its precise use.

FBI video: Domestic terrorist says he targeted conservative group for being ‘anti-gay’

Posted April 26, 2013

Family Research Council (FRC) officials released video of federal investigators questioning convicted domestic terrorist Floyd Lee Corkins II, who explained that he attacked the group’s headquarters because the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified them as a “hate group” due to their traditional marriage views.

“Southern Poverty Law lists anti-gay groups,” Corkins tells interrogators in the video, which FRC obtained from the FBI. “I found them online, did a little research, went to the website, stuff like that.”

The Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard reported that Corkins, who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges, said in court that he hoped to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.” As Bedard explained, “the shooting occurred after an executive with Chick-Fil-A announced his support for traditional marriage, angering same-sex marriage proponents.”

House leader calls on Kerry to disclose missile defense offer to Russians

A senior House Republican this week called on Secretary of State John Kerry to make public a U.S. offer of cooperation with Russia on missile defenses made recently in Moscow.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R., Ala.), chairman of the House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee, stated in a letter sent Tuesday to Kerry that he is concerned about the offer disclosed in statements this week by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Unfortunately, for the second time in as many weeks, Secretary Kerry has alluded to making deals with foreign countries regarding our missile defense,” Rogers said in a statement. “I suggest he consult with Congress about deals it won’t possibly support prior to offering concessions with countries that are not friends of ours.”

Tea Party Senators Prep for Immigration Battle

Posted April 29, 2013

Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) now each appear to be positioning themselves in the fight against the push for the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill in much the same way the Senate’s Tea Party triumvirate knocked down the left’s push for new gun control legislation.

The three are joining Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) in questioning every painstaking detail of the bill, and reframing the narrative that those in favor of the legislation have driven including the need for a “path to citizenship” for America’s at least 11 million illegal immigrants and that the bill is tough on securing the border. Together, the group is using every tool at its disposal in the Senate--public pressure, process disputes and aggressive oversight procedures, among others--to fight against the legislation.

Rep. Louie Gohmert: ‘So Many Muslim Brotherhood Members’ Influencing Obama Admin. to Ignore Radical Islam Threat

Posted April 29, 2013

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) this week accused the Obama administration of being influenced by members of the Muslim Brotherhood into ignoring that the threat from radical Islam.

In an interview with the conservative World Net Daily, Gohmert said that particularly in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, “it’s very clear to everybody but this administration that radial Islam is at war against us.”

“I’m hoping either this administration will wake up or a new one will come in in the next election before irreparable damage is done because radical Islam is at war with us,” Gohmert repeated. “This administration has so many Muslim Brotherhood members that have influence that they just are making wrong decisions for America.”

Carpenter (Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at University at Albany), B. Blake Levitt (an award-winning science journalist), and many others.  You will gain a deeper understanding of the political and economic forces behind the “smart meter” agenda, as well as resources and proven solutions for how you can protect yourself, your family, your home, and your rights.

DOUBLE TAX: Texas lawmakers vote to use property taxes to build toll roads

Posted April 26, 2013

While the Texas House and Senate are busy competing over which chamber can come up with the most funding for public schools, another top priority of state government has taken a back seat -- roads. Though roads are needed to get to school, work, and make our economy thrive, state lawmakers continue to demonstrate that roads are NOT a top funding priority for state government. Instead, lawmakers are content to push the state’s obligation to fund our state highway system down to the local level by using LOCAL sales tax and property tax to build STATE highway projects.

Senate Bill 1110 that passed the Texas House today will go straight to Governor Rick Perry’s desk. The bill gives local authorities the ability to use property tax and sales tax to build TOLL projects. So the road would be built with tax money, but Texans would be charged a toll to actually use the road.

Rep. Louie Gohmert: Obama Middle East policy shaped by pro-Muslim Brotherhood advisers

Posted April 26, 2013

Louie Gohmert is a conservative firebrand.

Not afraid to stand alone on an issue he believes in, the Texas congressman is often in the news for making statements deemed outrageous — or that are actually outrageous, depending our your perspective.

On Wednesday, The Daily Caller spent the whole day shadowing him — from early morning baseball practice to an evening television hit — for an account that will be published next week.

Below is the transcript of an interview conducted with Gohmert as he walked back to his office after a Fox Business Network television appearance on Capitol Hill. In the interview, Gohmert discusses the state of the GOP, President Barack Obama's foreign policy, and whether he has considered running for Senate.
