McCain, Schumer Say Gun Control Will Get Another Vote This Year

Posted April 26, 2013

In comments made on April 25, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) both said they were saddened gun control didn't pass on April 17 but assured reporters the measures would be brought up for another vote some time this year.

"I think we will bring the bill back before the end of the year... lots of Senators who thought it was safe to vote against it [on April 17] because of the intensity [pro-gun groups] are not so sure anymore," Schumer said.

Schumer said the intensity for gun control has increased since the failed vote for gun control legislation, and he thinks Americans are now "intense" in their desire for more gun control.

GOP Bill Seeks to Cut Back Government Ammo Purchases

Posted April 26, 2013

AMMO Act would limit ammo buying, storing for non-Pentagon departments and agencies

Senate and House Republicans are set to introduce a joint bill Friday that would significantly limit the amount of ammunition that federal agencies are permitted to purchase and stockpile over the next six months.

The bill, authored by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R., Okla.) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R., Okla.), comes as numerous lawmakers across Capitol Hill have expressed concern that certain federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), are stockpiling high quantities of ammunition.

DHS, for instance, has placed two-years worth of ammunition, or nearly 247 million rounds, in its inventory.

Inhofe said these agencies must provide greater “transparency and accountability” over its ammo stockpiles so that the public can learn about its precise use.

FBI video: Domestic terrorist says he targeted conservative group for being ‘anti-gay’

Posted April 26, 2013

Family Research Council (FRC) officials released video of federal investigators questioning convicted domestic terrorist Floyd Lee Corkins II, who explained that he attacked the group’s headquarters because the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified them as a “hate group” due to their traditional marriage views.

“Southern Poverty Law lists anti-gay groups,” Corkins tells interrogators in the video, which FRC obtained from the FBI. “I found them online, did a little research, went to the website, stuff like that.”

The Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard reported that Corkins, who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges, said in court that he hoped to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.” As Bedard explained, “the shooting occurred after an executive with Chick-Fil-A announced his support for traditional marriage, angering same-sex marriage proponents.”

House leader calls on Kerry to disclose missile defense offer to Russians

A senior House Republican this week called on Secretary of State John Kerry to make public a U.S. offer of cooperation with Russia on missile defenses made recently in Moscow.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R., Ala.), chairman of the House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee, stated in a letter sent Tuesday to Kerry that he is concerned about the offer disclosed in statements this week by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Unfortunately, for the second time in as many weeks, Secretary Kerry has alluded to making deals with foreign countries regarding our missile defense,” Rogers said in a statement. “I suggest he consult with Congress about deals it won’t possibly support prior to offering concessions with countries that are not friends of ours.”

Exclusive--McConnell: Entire Country Should Be Exempt from ObamaCare

Posted April 26, 2013

Wednesday night, Politico reported that top lawmakers on Capitol Hill were in talks to exempt themselves and their staff from ObamaCare's health exchanges. According to the report, aides for Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Reid and Obama Administration officials were negotiating a congressional carve out from the law. In an exclusive to Breitbart News, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's office blasted the talks.

McConnell spokesman Brian McGuire told Breitbart News, “Senator McConnell does not support, and is not involved in drafting, legislation that would do special favors for Congress when his constituents are still facing the increased premiums and taxes, the mountains of red tape, the loss of health care plans they like and want to keep and fewer jobs under Obamacare."

Feds Won't Say if Tsarnaevs Had Gov't-Funded Phones

Posted April 26, 2013

On Thursday, the Boston Herald reported that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) refused to answer questions about whether Boston terror suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had a government-paid cellphone because of privacy laws.

The Herald reported Wednesday that “Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife and 3-year-old daughter collected welfare until 2012 and that both Tamerlan and Dzhokhar received benefits through their parents ‘for a limited portion’ of the time after they came to the U.S., which was around 2002.”

The Lifeline phone subsidy program, referred to as the “Obama phone” program by its critics, charges paying cell phone customers an average monthly fee of $2.50 per household to fund the now $2.2 billion program that provides lower-income individuals with free cell phones and service.

Bill Nelson Mulls Bid for Florida Governor

Posted April 26, 2013

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., is considering a bid against GOP Gov. Rick Scott in 2014.

“I’d say that’s true, that he’s considering it,” said Nelson spokesman Dan McLaughlin. “An awful lot of people have contacted him and asked him to do so. But — and as he’s said a number of times — he presently doesn’t have any intention of running. He’s got a job to do as a senator.”

Privately, top Florida Democrats described Nelson’s consideration as “fairly serious,”as Abby Livingston reported in Roll Call’s weekly Farm Team column.

“It’s on the way to being fairly serious. I think he is going to take a very close look at it,” a senior Florida Democratic official told CQ Roll Call. “It’s not very far along. I wouldn’t tell you it’s likely … [but] I think he will really look at it.”

Write-in campaign launched for conservative alternative to Sanford in special election

Posted April 26, 2013

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s congressional campaign has struggled over the past two weeks. Some conservatives are ready to throw in the towel. One conservative group is launching a write-in campaign for state Senator Larry Grooms, to give voters an alternative to Sanford and his Democratic opponent, Elizabeth Colbert Busch.

Last week, it was reported that Sanford’s ex-wife had filed a complaint against him for trespassing at her house. The National Republican Congressional Committee promptly announced that it would not provide assistance to the former governor’s campaign.

DOUBLE TAX: Texas lawmakers vote to use property taxes to build toll roads

Posted April 26, 2013

While the Texas House and Senate are busy competing over which chamber can come up with the most funding for public schools, another top priority of state government has taken a back seat -- roads. Though roads are needed to get to school, work, and make our economy thrive, state lawmakers continue to demonstrate that roads are NOT a top funding priority for state government. Instead, lawmakers are content to push the state’s obligation to fund our state highway system down to the local level by using LOCAL sales tax and property tax to build STATE highway projects.

Senate Bill 1110 that passed the Texas House today will go straight to Governor Rick Perry’s desk. The bill gives local authorities the ability to use property tax and sales tax to build TOLL projects. So the road would be built with tax money, but Texans would be charged a toll to actually use the road.

Rep. Louie Gohmert: Obama Middle East policy shaped by pro-Muslim Brotherhood advisers

Posted April 26, 2013

Louie Gohmert is a conservative firebrand.

Not afraid to stand alone on an issue he believes in, the Texas congressman is often in the news for making statements deemed outrageous — or that are actually outrageous, depending our your perspective.

On Wednesday, The Daily Caller spent the whole day shadowing him — from early morning baseball practice to an evening television hit — for an account that will be published next week.

Below is the transcript of an interview conducted with Gohmert as he walked back to his office after a Fox Business Network television appearance on Capitol Hill. In the interview, Gohmert discusses the state of the GOP, President Barack Obama's foreign policy, and whether he has considered running for Senate.

Last week was heart wrenching. It truly tested the resolve and faith of Americans across the country. On Monday, we witnessed a terrorist attack on our soil that killed three and tragically injured more than 150 innocent bystanders in Boston. Then, on Wednesday night, we watched as a fertilizer plant in West, Texas was consumed in flames killing dozens and destroying homes.

When devastation and tragedy occur, our hearts break for those who are harmed and who lose loved ones. We mourn and try to help. Then come questions that must be asked so that we can try to avoid such horrors in the future. C-SPAN Washington Journal, a show that I have appeared on numerous times, asked me to appear on their program last Wednesday – just two days after the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon. Being the Vice Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security and a former judge, they wanted me to weigh in on homeland security issues.

During the hour-long broadcast, the topic turned from terrorism to immigration. Being familiar with specific testimony on the subject, I made the comment that there are individuals with known terrorist ties, who are trained to act Hispanic in order to gain access to the United States to carry out harm.

This truthful assertion was based on fact, but has now been grossly misconstrued and vilified for simply restating information that has been publicly disclosed by those who knew. Liberal media outlets blasted out stories condemning me with outrageous titles – labeling me a “racist” among other things. Other media which did not know the truth simply accepted such false characterization without checking to see if my comments were true. Such writers have instead even called for Senators Ted Cruz, John Cornyn and Marco Rubio, as well as Gov. Rick Perry to denounce my statements.

During testimony before Congress, FBI Director Robert Mueller covered efforts by al Qaeda and Hizbollah to establish a presence specifically in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America.

Cruz Presses Big Sis: Did You Read the 844-page Immigration Bill?

Posted April 24, 2013

At Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” immigration bill, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) questioned Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on whether she actually read the bill she was testifying about before her appearance at the hearing.

With Napolitano having to focus most of her attention on the terrorist attacks in Boston, Cruz wondered where she found the time to read the legislation. She said she did read the bill, but Cruz joked that must have made a “busy weekend” for Napolitano.

Here’s a transcript of the exchange:

Sen. Cruz: Pathway to Citizenship Would Kill Immigration Reform Bill

Posted April 23, 2013

(CNSNews.com) – Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Monday that including a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants “jeopardizes the likelihood” of any immigration reform bill passing.

“I think if instead the bill includes elements that are deeply divisive – and I would note that I don’t think there is any issue in this entire debate that is more divisive than a path to citizenship for those who are here illegally - in my view, any bill that insists upon that jeopardizes the likelihood of passing any immigration reform bill,” said Cruz at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform.

Why Ted Cruz is not a typical freshman senator

Posted April 23, 2013

Dianne Feinstein was agitated.

The Democratic senator from California did not like the line of questioning she was getting from Sen. Ted Cruz, the freshman Republican from Texas, as she defended her so-called assault weapons bill before the Senate Judiciary Committee in March.

Cruz was reciting from the Constitution. He then asked that given Feinstein’s position on the government banning certain types of guns: Would she also approve of the government banning books it found harmful?

“I’m not a sixth grader,” Feinstein responded, expressing contempt for the question. She went on to point out that she had “studied the Constitution myself,” and “am reasonably well-educated.”

“I thank you for the lecture,” she added.

Demonizing Ted Cruz

Posted April 23, 2013

Ted Cruz has made quite an impression in just three months in the Senate. Like Marco Rubio, he is the son of a Cuban exile. He is a extraordinarily talented guy. Unlike Barack Obama, he had a stellar record both in academia and in the practice of law: he was national debating champion, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, clerked for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was named by American Lawyer magazine as one of the 50 Best Litigators under 45 in America, served as Solicitor General of the State of Texas and authored more than 80 briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court. As a law student, Cruz was described by Professor Alan Dershowitz as “off the charts brilliant.” He was elected to the Senate last year in what the Washington Post called “the biggest upset of 2012 . . . a true grassroots victory against very long odds.” So it is not surprising that, just as Cruz has quickly become a hero on the right, the Democratic Party is out to destroy him.
