Rand Paul filibuster energizes Tea Party against GOP establishment

Posted March 8, 2013

Sen. Rand Paul's 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor has rallied the fledgling Tea Party movement from a months-long slump and highlighted the schism between those brassy conservative newcomers and their Republican Party elders.

"What a night," Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer said after Paul's filibuster, which began Wednesday about noon and ended about 1 a.m. Thursday. "He has definitely energized the base in a way that it hasn't been energized in a long time."

"There couldn't have been a starker contrast between the new leadership of Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Ted Cruz and the old guard of McCain and Graham," noted one GOP aide.

Obama Brings bin Laden Son-in-Law to New York for Trial

Posted March 8, 2013

He is an unlawful enemy combatant, captured on foreign soil while engaged in hostilities against the United States. He belongs in the military justice system and detention facility established by Congress in accordance with the Constitution and the Supreme Court. Yet President Barack Obama has brought Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, son-in-law of Osama bin Laden, to face a civilian trial on U.S. soil in federal court in New York City.

In so doing, President Obama has defied the express will of Congress, which already refused to transfer foreign terror suspects from the Guantánamo Bay prison to the U.S. at the beginning of Obama’s first term. The decision to bring Abu Ghaith to New York is just the latest in a series of executive actions taken by President Obama that contradict the explicit intent of the legislature. It is also an action in pursuit of a policy doomed to fail.

Rotten to the Core: The Feds' Invasive Student Tracking Database

Posted March 8, 2013

(This is the fourth installment of a continuing series on nationalized academic standards known as the "Common Core.")

While many Americans worry about government drones in the sky spying on our private lives, Washington meddlers are already on the ground and in our schools gathering intimate data on children and families.

Say goodbye to your children's privacy. Say hello to an unprecedented nationwide student tracking system, whose data will apparently be sold by government officials to the highest bidders. It's yet another encroachment of centralized education bureaucrats on local control and parental rights under the banner of "Common Core."

As the American Principles Project, a conservative education think tank, reported last year, Common Core's technological project is "merely one part of a much broader plan by the federal government to track individuals from birth through their participation in the workforce." The 2009 porkulus package included a "State Fiscal Stabilization Fund" to bribe states into constructing "longitudinal data systems (LDS) to collect data on public-school students."

UN Agenda 21: Land Conservation is Trojan Horse for Big Government

Posted March 8, 2013

By Diana George Chapin

On Feb. 23 the Bangor Daily News and Lewiston Sun ran an article, “The good, bad and pricey parts of using public money for land conservation.” This piece started an important public dialogue about conservation in Maine, but the article only opened a small window into a topic that desperately requires in-depth discussion in communities and across the state. Why? Because Maine people have been systematically propagandized by the message “conservation is good” without having a meaningful public discussion about some of the collateral damage the land preservation movement is generating in rural towns.

On Tuesday, March 5 the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on LD 220, “An Act to Ban United Nations Agenda 21 in Maine,” a bill aimed to protect private property rights and Maine communities from the international soft law that has been shaping land use planning, public policy, public education and local sovereignty for decades.

Ted Cruz needs to hear from YOU

Please sign the Tea Party letter of support

Since taking office last month, Senator Ted Cruz has been attacked and smeared by both the mainstream media, the Hollywood elite and even some in the Republican establishment for standing up for the conservative values that are important to us.

- The New York Times said Cruz is an "Ornery, swaggering piece of work."

- The New Yorker applauded Senator Boxer's comparison of Cruz to McCarthyism.

- Cher, one of Hollywood's most vocal liberal singers, tweeted that Ted Cruz is an "IDIOT,BIGOT, CREATURE FROM THE NETHER REGIONS."

- Salon called Cruz a "bully."

The left is orchestrating these attacks in an attempt to silence Senator Cruz and stop him from speaking out against Obama's big-government, progressive agenda. We cannot let Senator Cruz stand in Washington alone! It can be trying and difficult to go against the grain of the Washington, D.C. insiders, and we must let Ted know that we support and appreciate the tough job he is doing.

Take a stand with Ted by signing your name to this letter we are delivering to him personally.

Gun Background-check Bill Stumbles, Senators Press On

Posted March 8, 2013

But the bill on federal background checks for all gun purchases hit a roadblock after two senators negotiating on its provisions brought their talks to a halt.

Democrat Chuck Schumer was seeking to team with Senator Tom Coburn, a Republican with an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association, but the pair failed to resolve a dispute over requiring that records of private gun sales be kept by the seller.

Republicans argue that such data should be destroyed, or it could ultimately be used to compile a national gun registry, something currently prohibited by law.

Despite the setback, Coburn insisted he was "still hopeful we'll get a bill that will actually enhance background checks."

"Our deal is to find the sweet spot in the middle," he told reporters.

‘Christ’ kicked out of city council invocation in Longview, Wash.

Posted March 8, 2013

Longview, Wash., Mayor Don Jensen says men and women of faith who are asked to open the city council meetings with prayer may no longer invoke the name of Jesus Christ.

"It's not my choice to stop this, but I don't know how we can put our citizens at jeopardy and cost our city and our citizens a lot of money," he said, following consultations with the city attorney who advised of the potential for lawsuits for invoking Jesus Christ at the meeting, The Associated Press reports.

The backlash from churches was immediate.

AWOL: Meet The GOP Senators Who Refused to Stand With Rand

Posted March 7, 2013

It's time to name names.

Yesterday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) embarked upon a historic filibuster in an attempt to coax the White House to answer a basic and fundamental constitutional question that affects every American's 5th Amendment rights. He was joined by thirteen other Republican Senators as well as one Democrat.

While the stand for liberty and government accountability was taking place on Capitol Hill, a handful of Republican Senators were having an off-the-record dinner with President Barack Obama.  Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) notebaly attended the dinner wiht the President and then made their way to the Senate Chambers and participated in the filibuster.

Republican members of the House of Representatives walked down the hall to support Sen. Paul.  Rep. Louie Gohmert even brought the weary senator some chocolate bars and cough drops.

But what about the Republican senators who had something better to do Wednesday night?

More Observations on Mayor Castro

Posted March 8, 2013 - by George Rodriguez

If anyone has any questions about San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro’s plans and intentions for San Antonio, they just need to make some simple observations.

For example, March 2nd was Texas Independence Day and Mayor Castro did not make one public remark about it. In fact, the Travis Letter visited the Alamo, and while people flocked to see the document, Mayor Castro did not attend. That should not surprise us, though.

The Mayor’s mother, Rosa Castro, is a former member of the radical La Raza Unida group in the 1970s and once described the defenders of the Alamo as “a bunch of drunks”. The Raza Unida group believed Mexico was the victim of Anglo American expansionism, racism, colonialism, and capitalist imperialism. Given that this belief was probably present in the Castro home, it shouldn’t be surprising that the Mayor did not attend or commemorate Texas Independence activities in his own city.

U.S. Sen. Cruz: Restore Growth First – Defund Obamacare

Posted March 7, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) today released the following statement on his Continuing Resolution amendment to delay funding of Obamacare:

For the last four years, our economy has grown at just 0.8% per year. As a result of this anemic growth, 23 million Americans are struggling to find work, and millions more are being denied a fair opportunity to achieve the American dream.

Economic growth these past four years has been a small fraction of historic levels: since World War II, our economy has averaged 3.3% growth each year. Until economic growth returns, none of our economic problems can be solved. Improving the lives of the middle class, protecting our seniors, empowering people to escape poverty, and reining in the federal debt…all depend on economic growth.

The very first priority of every elected official—Democrat and Republican—should be restoring economic growth, so we can ensure continued strength, prosperity, and opportunity for the next generations.

Obamacare does precisely the opposite. It is already hurting small businesses, reducing the hours Americans are allowed to work, forcing employers to drop coverage, and leading to substantial increases in healthcare premiums—especially for young people. And, if Obamacare is fully implemented, it will create an even further drag on the economy, killing jobs and making it harder for those struggling to climb the economic ladder.

In my view, Obamacare should be fully repealed, and I have introduced legislation to do so.

At a minimum, however, it should not be implemented at time when our economy is struggling so mightily, at a time when its implementation could push us into a full recession.

Therefore, when the Senate votes on the Continuing Resolution, I intend to offer a “Restore Growth First” amendment which will delay funding of Obamacare. I believe we should continue to delay such funding at least until economic growth returns to historic averages, and I intend to object to consideration of any Continuing Resolution that does not include a vote to delay funding of Obamacare.

Last quarter, our economy grew just 0.1%. Getting growth back, getting Americans back to work, should be our top priority, and we should all roll up our sleeves and work in a bipartisan way to get that done.

Cruz: Defund Obamacare through spending bill

Posted March 7, 2013

Texas Republican Sen.Ted Cruz declared Wednesday that he will reject any government spending bill that does not directly cut off funds to the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama’s signature piece of legislation.

Cruz said “he will offer an amendment to delay the flow of funds to implement the healthcare law when the Senate takes up a continuing resolution to fund the federal government,” the Hill reports.

“I believe we should continue to delay such funding at least until economic growth returns to historic averages, and I intend to object to consideration of any continuing resolution that does not include a vote to delay funding of Obamacare,” Cruz said in a statement.
