2014 Midterm Surprise

Is the Tea Party alert to a midterm Democrat surprise?

Lee Cary 02-27-2013

Will the Tea Party be ready to respond to an unexpected Democrat challenge to the G.O.P.’s hopes of keeping the House?

On the G.O.P. side, between today and the 2014 elections, what’s likely to change?

Will John Boehner be replaced by a new Speaker? Say, Paul Ryan? There’s nothing now to suggest that’ll happen.

If G.O.P. fund-raising efforts are tepid moving toward ‘14, that could increase the pressure for a new House Speaker, but the decibel level of any talk of that happening is inaudible.

By ’14, will a new Republican Party leader emerge from the Senate, or a Governor’s Mansion, and become the leading challenger for the Presidency?

That’s unlikely.  For one thing, it could cause that candidate to peak too soon and, by the ‘16 election, become old news, having been beat up by the liberal media.  And Americans, many with the attention span of hummingbirds, don’t like old news and bruised candidates. Particularly Republicans.

Hagel wins confirmation to lead Pentagon

Posted February 27, 2013

Chuck Hagel won confirmation Tuesday to become defense secretary over objections to his views on Middle East security and the administration’s handling of an attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya.

On a 58 to 41 vote, the Senate confirmed the former GOP senator as four Republicans joined 54 Democrats in approving Hagel, ending a nearly two-month battle that included an unprecedented filibuster against the nominee.

The four Republican senators voting in favor were Thad Cochran (Miss.), Mike Johanns (Neb.), Richard C. Shelby (Ala.) and Rand Paul (Ky.). All 41 no votes came from Republicans.

Arkansas will let guns on school campuses, despite student, faculty disapproval

Posted February 27, 2013

The legislature has approved a bill that would let universities in the state decide whether to permit guns on campus.

The Republican-controlled state Senate voted 31-4 to send the bill to the desk of Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, who has indicated he will sign it. The governing boards of individual universities will then gain the power to permit guns on campus.

If schools decide to keep guns banned, the law will require them to revisit the issue each year.

The GOP Establishment Should Think Twice Before Trying to Undermine the Tea Party

Posted February 27, 2013

Even though it changed the terms of the political debate, thus giving them a majority in the 2010 elections, many in the Republican establishment deeply resent the Tea Party. They don’t like being monitored by taxpayer-friendly groups that will expose them when they side with special interests (as they have in recent months on Export-Import Bank subsides and housing handouts).

And they really hate the idea of being held accountable at the polls when they side with the corrupt big-spenders in Washington. Just ask Senator Bennett and Congressman Inglis.

Pork…or principles?

20 Of The Most Embarrassing Moments In The History Of The Democrat Party

Posted February 26, 2013 (John Hawkins)

For example, one will virtually never hear that the Palmer Raids, Prohibition, or American eugenics were thoroughly progressive phenomena. These are sins America itself must atone for. Meanwhile, real or alleged “conservative” misdeeds — say McCarthyism — are always the exclusive fault of conservatives and a sign of the policies they would repeat if given power. The only culpable mistake that liberals make is failing to fight “hard enough” for their principles. Liberals are never responsible for historic misdeeds because they feel no compulsion to defend the inherent goodness of America. Conservatives, meanwhile, not only take the blame for events not of their own making that they often worked the most assiduously against, but find themselves defending liberal misdeeds in order to defend America herself. -- Jonah Goldberg

1) The Trail of Tears (1838): The first Democrat President, Andrew Jackson and his successor Martin Van Buren, herded Indians into camps, tormented them, burned and pillaged their homes and forced them to relocate with minimal supplies. Thousands died along the way.

2) Democrats Cause The Civil War (1860):

Tea partyers fight for right-thinking GOP; electability vs. principle at issue

Posted February 25, 2013

Amy Kremer, Tea Party Express chairwoman, said Mr. Rove’s effort threatens to “water down the brand” because he is willing to support “RINOs” (“Republican In Name Only”) as long as it edges the party closer to a majority.

Mrs. Kremer said she would rather have had Christine O’Donnell stick to her principles and lose her 2010 Senate race in Delaware to Democrat Christopher A. Coons than to have had Rep. Mike Castle, a moderate, win it.

“He is willing to sacrifice principle for power, and we are not going to sacrifice on that,” Mrs. Kremer said. “There are Republicans that are just as responsible as Democrats are for this out-of-control spending, and we need people who are willing to rein it in.”

Three steps: How the Dems plan to make Texas a battleground state by 2016

Posted February 27, 2013

On Tuesday morning, the Democrats launched an independent group called Battleground Texas, which is capable of making the Lone Star state a battleground by 2016 and a lean-Democrat state by 2024, effectively breaking the back of the national GOP and blocking a Republican path to the White House.

Yes — that Texas: The state that has not elected a single statewide Democratic official in 10 years, with Republicans going 100-0; the state that has had an entirely Republican government since 2002, with current super majorities in the legislature; and the state that hasn't voted for a Democratic president since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

History aside, if neither party lifts a finger to change current trends, the demographic changes taking place in Texas will — by themselves — seal it as blue by around 2040. The Democrats, however, plan to lift more than a finger; and if they play their cards right, they could speed the process up by 25 years, putting Texas in play much sooner.

Texas 'Cruz Missile' -- Senator standing by his principles, ready to take the heat

Posted February 27, 2013

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has earned a few nicknames in the brief seven weeks he’s been in Congress – including the unflattering “Senator No.” But nobody can say the freshman senator has broken his campaign promise to shake up Washington upon arrival.

The Tea Party-backed candidate has so far made good on vows to be combative and uncompromising in his adherence to conservative principles.

The 42-year-old Cruz has already voted against Senate rule changes to modestly curb filibusters, aid for Superstorm Sandy victims and the Violence Against Women Act, arguing that stopping and punishing violent criminals is largely a state responsibility.

The Islamification of Texas

Posted February 27, 2013

Imagine browsing Facebook one day and discovered a photograph of your 14-year-old daughter wearing a burqa – at school.

That’s exactly what happened to a parent in Lumberton, Tex. She asked me not to disclose her identity because she fears for her daughter’s safety.

Her daughter’s world geography class was supposed to be learning about the continents. Instead, they were given a tutorial in Islam – complete with authentic Muslim garments. Some of the young ladies were photographed – and the image has now gone viral.

The students were told the purpose of the class was to change their perceptions of Islam. They were instructed to no longer call those who commit terrorist attacks terrorists. Instead, the Muslim terrorists were to be called freedom fighters.

Cruz riles foes, wins fans in D.C.

Posted February 27, 2013

Washington - No U.S. Senate debut in memory has so teemed with tumult and controversy as Ted Cruz’s first days on the job.

But by the time the Texas freshman departed Washington for Texas for the first break in his nascent Senate career, the loquacious two-time Princeton University national debate champ had been silenced.

It wasn’t a sanction imposed by the Senate – though, to judge by the condemnation being heaped upon him, it seemed that banishment might have been in order were it within the Senate’s power.

Rather, it was his own vocal cords that, for a few days, quieted Cruz.

“I’ve lost my voice entirely, perhaps from cheering too much at last night’s State of the Union,” croaked Cruz, passing when his turn came to question Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano at a Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration.

Ted Cruz's Tactics Boil Washington, But Impress Texas

Posted February 27, 2013

HOUSTON - Ted Cruz glanced at his black cowboy boots, beneath a silver Texas belt buckle, waiting for the admirers to stop clapping.

His arrival had turned a drop-by at a Houston lumber yard into a virtual campaign rally. At an earlier stop near Austin _at a gun manufacturer that churns out AR-15 rifles – cheering fans crowded next to employees, and one held a sign reading "Ted Cruz rocks!"

The new troublemaker of the U.S. Senate was home again, and savoring nothing short of a victory lap.

In just seven weeks on the job, the insurgent Republican elected with the tea party's backing and bankroll has run afoul of GOP mainstays, prompted Democrats to compare his style to McCarthyism and has voted against nearly everything of significance that came before him.

Navarrette: New kid in an old boys’ club

Posted February 27, 2013

Who knew that a Hispanic Republican senator could get in this much hot water without reaching for bottled water?

I’ve become accustomed to politicians who keep their heads down and rarely say anything interesting because they’re afraid of drawing fire. Rare are those who speak their minds, defend their principles and worry more about doing their job than keeping it.

That’s how Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has been conducting himself in his first two months in office, and the Washington establishment is aghast. Cruz has been my friend for 10 years, and I can’t say I’m surprised.

In the exclusive club of the U.S. Senate, holding folks accountable can get you in trouble — at least if you’re a Republican. If you’re a Democrat, you’ll be fine.
