Government Run Television Expands

NBC hires former Obama officials Axelrod, Gibbs

Former White House senior adviser David Axelrod is joining NBC News and MSNBC as a senior political analyst, according to the Washington Post.

Axelrod, who was President Barack Obama’s chief strategist in 2008, left Washington in early 2011 to begin preparations for Obama’s 2012 reelection bid.

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has also joined NBC News and MSNBC, making his debut as a political contributor the night of the State of the Union address.

While these decisions follow a long line of presidential advisers and press secretaries making the jump to television — Karl Rove and Dana Perino from President George W. Bush’s administration come to mind — how appropriate that these former Obama loyalists find a home at NBC.

Few can argue that there is a television network more “friendly” to Barack Obama, or more invested in his electoral success.

NBC was owned by General Electric during the 2008 presidential election before selling controlling interest to Comcast in 2011, while maintaining 49% ownership — Comcast recently announced that it will buy GE’s remaining stock ahead of the previously agreed upon schedule.

After Obama’s election in 2008, the White House loosened eligibility requirements, making GE Capital, the financial services division of GE, eligible for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

Spelling-challenged Leon Panetta warns DOD civilian employees of impending layoffs in urgent "MEMORANDOM"

Posted February 21, 2013

Lee writes:

DoD civilian employees received this email today [02/20/2013] from Leon Panetta. Thought you might be interesting in posting it. The source is impeccable, received a copy him/herself, and gave me permission to use it as I wish.

P.S., Notice the SecDef office spelled “MEMORANDOM,” “consistant,” “personel,” and “contine” incorrectly. Unbelievable.

SUBJECT: Preparations for Potential Sequestration on March 1 and Furlough Notifications

For more than a year and a half, the President, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and I have repeatedly voiced our deep concerns over the half a trillion dollars in automatic across-the-board cuts that would be imposed under sequestration and the severe damage that it would do to both this Department and our national defense.

Prosecutors to pursue felony charges against ex-soldier for possessing high-capacity magazine

Posted February 21, 2013

New York prosecutors will pursue felony criminal charges against retired special forces soldier Nathan Haddad, who was arrested in LeRay, New York in January for allegedly possessing five 30-round AR-15 magazines.

Prosecutors had reportedly offered Haddad a plea bargain that would spare him jail time if he admitted to five misdemeanors, according to the conservative law blog Legal Insurrection. But Haddad’s attorney told the blog that Haddad, who currently works at the Department of Defense, will not accept the deal.

Haddad was deployed four times during his ten-year Army career, and was once injured during special forces training in South Korea. He was discharged in October 2010.

NRA going on the airwaves, targeting incumbent senators up for re-election in 2014

Posted February 21, 2013

The National Rifle Association is kicking off election season with ads targeting several incumbent senators who are up for re-election in 2014.

A source familiar with the buy told The Daily Caller that the campaign will be a combination of digital and print ads focusing on an internal White House memo that said that an assault weapons ban and universal background checks — two policies that administration has been pushing for in the gun control debate in the wake of the Newtown school shooting — would not be wholly effective in reducing violence unless coupled with other efforts, such as limiting the supply of weapons through a buyback program and requiring gun registration to prevent straw purchases of weapons.

'NCIS: LA' Paints Tea Party-style Patriots as Terrorists

Posted February 21, 2013

Last night's episode of CBS' NCIS: Los Angeles offered a veritable smorgasbord of liberal tropes--Tea Party types portrayed as terrorists, private healthcare insurance companies slammed and a potpouri of anti-capitalist themes.

The episode started off in an interesting direction when the NCIS team came across the murder of a 1960s leftist radical who had been on the run from the feds for inadvertently killing a fellow terrorist. But it wasn't long before the idea of a '60s-era radical became an attack on all things conservative.

Tea Party Plans to Launch its Own Latino Outreach

Posted February 20, 2013

The Tea Party group that sponsored a prime-time response last week to President Obama's State of the Union address is the latest group recognizing the power of the Latino vote.

Officials with the Tea Party Express, the nation’s largest Tea Party political action committee, have been discussing their own Latino outreach, said Sal Russo, the group’s co-founder.

“We’ve been trying to do a bus tour that would focus on communities that we don’t normally talk to,” Russo said.

Conservative Leaders Defend Sen. Ted Cruz for Rocking the Boat

Posted February 21, 2013

(CNSNews.com) – Conservative leaders are voicing their support for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) after the freshman senator came under fire from some Senate colleagues and liberal pundits for his tough questioning of Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel, criticism that included equating Cruz with the late anti-communist Senator Joe McCarthy (R-Wisc.)

“Senator Ted Cruz came to Washington to advance conservative policies, not play by the same old rules that have relegated conservatives, and their ideas, to the back bench,” Michael Needham, president of the influential Heritage Action said on Tuesday. “It should come as absolutely no surprise the Washington Establishment – be it the liberal media, entrenched special interests or even wayward Republicans – are now attacking him in the press for following through on his promises.”

Frank Cannon, president of the American Principles Project, said: “It’s about time someone annoyed those who have been complacent in doing what is necessary to get the country back on track.  We applaud Senator Ted Cruz’s dedication to conservative principles and being an articulate spokesman for those principles.  We are pleased he is shaking up Washington and doing exactly what the people of Texas elected him to do.”

Sen. Cruz Praises Role of Small Business in Texas, National Economies

Posted February 21, 2013

HOUSTON, TX – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) today highlighted the importance of small businesses to the Texas and national economies and his efforts to reverse the Obama Administration’s misguided policies that are stifling job creators’ ability to thrive. He visited Lodge Lumber, a Houston-based small business.

“This is what America is all about, small businesses. They are the backbone of our economy. If we want to turn our economy around and get Americans back to work, small businesses will be the key to doing so,” said Sen. Cruz. “In his State of the Union speech, President Obama could have taken the opportunity to find real bipartisan cooperation on pro-growth policies and job creation. Instead he doubled down on the policies of the last four years – more spending, more debt and more regulations that are strangling small businesses and killing jobs. If enacted, the President’s policies would make it harder for everyone working towards the American dream.”

WH: Obama Called Hillary at 10PM on Night of Benghazi Attack--About Same Time Clinton First Publicly Linked Attack to YouTube Video

Posted February 20, 2013

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama called Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at approximately 10 p.m. on the night of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told CNSNews.com.

That was more than six hours after the attacks started, more than an hour before Tryone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed--and about the time that Clinton first released a statement linking the attacks to “inflammatory material posted on the Internet,” a reference to an anti-Muslim video on YouTube.

The wave is coming: Trade and debt will overwhelm Texas absent new funding (Photos)

Posted February 20, 2013
by Terri Hall

The eighth annual Texas Transportation Forum hosted by the Texas Transportation Institute and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) kicked off yesterday in Austin with all eyes on the future - the future of international trade in light of the Panama Canal expansion, the future of road funding, and even the future of driving (like driverless cars).

The big question the Panama Canal discussion tried to answer was whether or not Texas is ready for the coming tidal wave of trade and super-barges (and cargo that will be off-loaded onto super-trucks). The answer is ‘yes’ and ‘no.’

Texas Senators Slam State's Testing Regime

Posted February 20, 2013

tate senators took turns publicly condemning Texas' student assessment system — the implementation of which one lawmaker called a "colossal failure" —  at a Tuesday Education Committee meeting.

They had wide-ranging questions for officials from the Texas Education Agency and Pearson, the private company that holds a $468 million test-development contract with the state, on topics from the exam-scoring process to the tests' accuracy in measuring student comprehension.

"Either the teachers and the schools are doing a poor job of teaching the curriculum or you all are incorrect that these tests are accurate tests," said Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston and the committee's chairman, pressing for an explanation of students' low passing rates. "Which is it?"
