In defense of Christine O’Donnell

Posted February 18, 2013

Americans love to watch public figures eviscerated publicly. Progressives love to bash conservatives. And the media will go out of their way to cripple conservative candidates (even if it means missing wildly and making an ass out of themselves, i.e., Wolf Blitzer and Marco Rubio’s water bottle). But progressives, the media and the American public will eventually cease their assault, if for no other reason than the story gets old and the appetite for schadenfreude eventually wanes.

For over two years now, center-right political professionals — from Charles Krauthammer and Karl Rove down to local GOP pols — have trashed Christine O’Donnell without relent. They’ve made her name synonymous with embarrassing failure. The declamations are tossed off casually by TV’s alleged conservatives, usually as a cautionary tale. Among the right’s talking heads, Christine O’Donnell is invoked as a two-word epithet utilized to dismiss unfit and extreme Republican candidates, most often upstarts. I object. Partly to correct the historical record, partly to defend Christine, partly to stymie a lingering and erroneous bit of conventional wisdom on the right, but mostly to tell Karl Rove that he can go sit on a volcano, I offer a sadly rare defense of Christine O’Donnell.

Which Major Tea Party Leader Does Karl Rove Want ‘More’ Of?

Posted February 18, 2013

GOP strategist Karl Rove has drawn fire from conservative critics recently for his creation of the “Conservative Victory Project,” an organization devoted to stopping what Rove considers to be “unelectable” candidates from running for major public offices (the archetypal example being Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-MO) disastrous run against Senator Claire McCaskill). The announcement of the group’s existence has prompted many conservatives to vocally denounce Rove for trying to keep out promising anti-establishment candidates, citing such cases as Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

Yet to hear Rove himself tell it, those aren’t the people he means when he talks about “unelectable” candidates. Rather, his targets are people like Akin or 2010′s disastrous Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell. In fact, Rove seems to rather like at least one of the aforementioned Tea Party candidates.

If the leader of the free world can lie with such impunity we are doomed

James Delingpole - The Telegraph (UK)

Earlier this week in his State of the Union address President Obama made some observations on climate change so brimming with falsehoods I'm surprised his nose didn't fall off.

It really doesn't matter where he himself was deliberately lying or whether he was merely lending the gravitas of his office to the deliberate lies of others. The point is that the President of the USA has access to any number of fact checkers and advisers and if he stands up and addresses the nation with a farrago of complete untruths then the buck stops with him. This dissembling and mendacity becomes all the more culpable when it forms the basis of major public policy decisions which will have a serious impact on people's lives in the US and beyond.

So why is this snake-oil salesman being allowed to get away with it?

Climate Change Poll from Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont

I knew once CA passed legislation for a Carbon Tax it wouldn't be long before other states picked up on the game. A Carbon Tax will only serve to make people like Al Gore, President Obama and all their globalist buddies extremely wealthy. The bank that will process all of the Carbon Taxes is in Chicago and all the usual suspects have holding interests. This is just another scheme to get more money. Vehicle Miles Traveled tax is also coming down the pike. By the time these jokers are done with us we will own nothing and will have no freedoms.

WE MUST STOP THIS IN VT NOW. Please vote and PLEASE PLEASE share. If people are afraid to fill out this survey and provide their email address then fear will destroy us. If you are afraid to stand up then get rid of your email address because they already know everything they need to know about you just by having an email address. If you fill out the survey you will see totals for each question. VT is in BIG TROUBLE. If this passes in VT what state will be next………might be YOURS.

Five Tools to Protect Your Privacy Online

Sovereign Man
Notes From The Field

We've discussed many times before--hardly a month goes by without some major action against Internet users... from Obama's 'kill switch', to ACTA, SOPA and PIPA, to stasi tactics against people like Kim Dotcom.

Online privacy is becoming more important by the day. And nobody is going to give it to you, you have to take steps yourself to secure it.

Below are five different tools and services that will get you started:

1. Tor Browser

Tor is a great weapon in the fight for online anonymity as it allows you to surf the web without giving up your location and other personal data to the websites you visit.

The Tor Browser Bundle is the easiest and most secure way to get started; simply download it, and start surfing the web with the Tor Browser. It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Read more...

KNIGHT: The kidnapping lobby is at it again

The government wants to get to the kids early and often

What’s the real message behind Barack Obama’s call in his State of the Union speech for taxpayer-funded “universal” preschool and his trip to a Georgia preschool last Thursday for photo ops?
It’s that the government wants to get its hands on our children even earlier.

From the time children are 5 or 6 years old up through their senior year of high school, government schools run by left-wing teachers’ unions have them at least seven hours a day, five days a week during most of the year.

They use that time to teach them just enough English and math to pass standardized tests, while force-feeding them a secular, progressive mindset that views American capitalism as a world problem and more government as the solution. They also teach them Kinsey-inspired sex education that corrupts kids and has helped to spike the number of sexually transmitted infections to more than 20 million annually.

The Risk of Obama's Universal Daycare

Posted February 18, 2013

Obama's initiative is only emerging but its key elements are clear. A state-federal partnership will guarantee a pre-kindergarten education to every family whose income falls below 200% of the poverty line ($38,000 for a single parent with two children). Head Start will also be massively expanded (it currently consumes $7.6 billion). More money will also go to the Nurse Family Partnership program with its home visits to assist in parenting.
Predictably, as with all top-down education programs (recall No Child Left Behind), this early intervention will, allegedly, be cost effective since it will "cure" multiple future problems, e.g., teen pregnancy, school drop outs, and crime, while, miraculously, closing race- related gaps in academic achievement.
This hyper-expensive proposal is probably DOA given GOP control of the House but, rest assured, its allure is forever. With that in mind, let me offer an antidote that, I hope, can cure this seemingly irrepressible urge to fix everything by enrolling millions of toddlers into state-administered daycare.

Regulations, litigation force cancellation of Texas coal-fired power plant construction

Posted February 18, 2018

Opponents of the coal industry won a victory last week when it was announced that the White Stallion coal-fired power plant in Matagorda County, suspended development, partly due to litigation costs and potential federal environmental regulations.

“We have decided to ask the Travis County Court for a stay in the litigation against our … air permit through December of this year,” Randy Bird, COO for White Stallion, told STATEIMPACT TEXAS. “Our air permit extension expires then. If the stay is granted, we will not commence construction while the stay is in effect.”

Texas Senator Goes on Attack and Raises Bipartisan Hackles

Posted February 18, 2013
Jonathan Weisman - NY Times

WASHINGTON — As the Senate edged toward a divisive filibuster vote on Chuck Hagel’s nomination to be defense secretary, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, sat silent and satisfied in the corner of the chamber — his voice lost to laryngitis — as he absorbed what he had wrought in his mere seven weeks of Senate service.

Mr. Hagel, a former senator from Mr. Cruz’s own party, was about to be the victim of the first filibuster of a nominee to lead the Pentagon. The blockade was due in no small part to the very junior senator’s relentless pursuit of speeches, financial records or any other documents with Mr. Hagel’s name on them going back at least five years. Some Republicans praised the work of the brash newcomer, but others joined Democrats in saying that Mr. Cruz had gone too far.

Ted Cruz Gambles

Newly-minted U.S. Senator Ted Cruz is risking his political career by, as the New York Times reports, “taking confrontational Tea Party sensibilities to new heights.”

Times’ Jonathan Weisman calls Cruz “Washington’s new bad boy.” (Begs the question: Who was the old one?”)

Weisman adds that, “[E]ven some Republican colleagues are growing publicly frustrated with a man who has taken the zeal of the prosecutor and applied it to the decorous quarters of the Senate.”

Oh, oh. Ted’s in trouble now. He’s embarrassing the Old Guard by being indecorously zealous. And what’s more, he’s being disagreeable, according to another prestigious news outlet. Read More...

TX Senator Ted Cruz: Confusing the Old Guys

Posted February 18, 2013

Democrats in Washington—including honorary Democrats Lindsay Graham and John McCain– are confused.

Who changed the rules and allowed a junior Senator to question the establishment?  The old guys are completely baffled because in just a little over two months, Texas Senator Ted Cruz is literally turning Washington upside down and asking some very important questions about Chuck Hagel.

“I made promises to the people of Texas that I would come to Washington to shake up the status quo,” he said in an e-mail interview with the New York Times. “That is what I intend to do, and it is what I have done in every way possible in the responsibilities that have been granted to me.”

Proposal considers collapse of U.S. and how Lone Star state would survive

Texas was its own nation before joining the United States, and many jokes have been made about some Texans still not recognizing that “other government” with which it now is affiliated.

But lawmakers there are drawing attention by considering a law that would have Texas review how it would respond should the U.S. government no longer be there to send federal tax revenue back to the state.

The proposal would set up a committee to study what the state gets from Washington, “the effects on the state budget if federal fiscal policy necessitates a significant reduction in or elimination of federal funding” and “a plan to address the loss of federal money.”

The plan, HB 568, has been introduced by Rep. James White, who said in a statement Texas Self-Sufficiency Act “creates a select committee to evaluate the effects of a possible reduction in or elimination of federal funding on the state budget due to federal fiscal policy.”

“Due to the fiscal dysfunction of Washington, D.C., and the fact that more than a third of our state’s budget revenue comes from the federal government, Texas needs to study what it would mean if the federal government couldn’t meet its obligations,” he said.
