GOP 'Suspends' Constitution in Debt Fight

January 23, 2013

In legislation filed yesterday, the House GOP Leadership made an important twist in their plan to pass a short-term increase in the debt ceiling. Rather than increase the debt ceiling by a few hundred billion dollars, buying them time for further talks on the budget, they have opted to "suspend" the debt ceiling. Its a blatant abdication of their constitutional authority. It's an ominous sign of the talks to come.

Article 1 of the US Constitution gives Congress the exclusive authority to borrow money to fund the government. Up until World War I, Congress would approve every bond issuance. The borrowing demands of the war made this impractical, so Congress authorized a "debt ceiling," where the government could freely borrow up to a statutory limit and then go back to Congress to approve additional borrowing. Think of it as giving your teenager a pre-paid debit card.

With this measure, the government had more flexibility to manage its affairs while preserving the Constitutional principle that Congress controlled the purse strings.

McDonald's pays $700,000 in Islamic food settlement

January 23, 2013

McDonald's and one of its franchisees have agreed to pay $700,000 to members of a Detroit-area Muslim community to settle a class action lawsuit alleging one of its local restaurants falsely advertised that its food is prepared according to Islamic dietary law.

According to Fox News, the tentative settlement by McDonald's and Finley's Management Co. was reached Friday, and is expected to be finalized March 1.

The lawsuit alleged that a chicken sandwich purchased by Ahmed Ahmed in September 2011 at a Dearborn McDonald's was not halal, or permissible for consumption according to specific Islamic dietary laws.

Rotten to the Core: Obama's War on Academic Standards (Part 1)

January 23, 2013

America's downfall doesn't begin with the "low-information voter." It starts with the no-knowledge student.

For decades, collectivist agitators in our schools have chipped away at academic excellence in the name of fairness, diversity and social justice. "Progressive" reformers denounced Western civilization requirements, the Founding Fathers and the Great Books as racist. They attacked traditional grammar classes as irrelevant in modern life. They deemed ability grouping of students (tracking) bad for self-esteem. They replaced time-tested rote techniques and standard algorithms with fuzzy math, inventive spelling and multicultural claptrap.

Under President Obama, these top-down mal-formers — empowered by Washington education bureaucrats and backed by misguided liberal philanthropists led by billionaire Bill Gates — are now presiding over a radical makeover of your children's school curriculum. It's being done in the name of federal "Common Core" standards that do anything but raise achievement standards.

Stop Common Core

January 23, 2013

If you’ve never heard of Common Core (relabeled the “Common Core Georgia Performance Standards” in Georgia), it’s a nationwide initiative designed to herd states into national K-12 standards and national tests – which ultimately will lead to a national curriculum and silence curriculum input from local parents, taxpayers, and educators.

Proponents insist that the Common Core initiative is “state-led” and “voluntary,” and that the national standards are “rigorous,” “internationally benchmarked,” and designed to make our students “college-and career-ready.” They also insist that Georgia is not relinquishing control over its standards and curriculum by adopting Common Core, and that the federal government is not controlling this effort. Not true. This website will show you the truth.

True the Vote: Colin Powell Either Confused, Disingenuous on Election Turnout

January 23, 2013

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell continues to promote the Democratic Party. What started with an endorsement of President Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential elections, has now become a regurgitation of misleading and inaccurate Democratic Party talking points.

Powell told MSNBC’s viewers that Republicans were trying to reduce voters from exercising their right to vote in stating:

Should we really have gone after reducing the turnout of voters in those places where we thought it would make a difference?

He further stated:

The Republican Party should be a party that says, ‘We want everybody to vote,’ and make it easier to vote and give them a reason to vote for the party, not to find ways to keep them from voting at all.

In an exclusive interview, True the Vote’s founder and director, Catherine Engelbrecht, said “The vast majority of voters across the spectrum support the US having voter ID laws, just like each and every other Western Industrialized Democracy.”

Texas Prepares for Sovereignty if U.S. Defaults

Rep. James White Files Texas Self Sufficiency Act HB 568

Posted January 23, 2013

State Rep. James White has proposed a bill that will require the leaders of Texas to start crunching the numbers and figure out what Texas would look like if it had to be self sufficient... limited or no federal support.... OUR OWN COUNTRY.... oops, I am getting a little ahead of myself, haha. Hey, I didn't say Texas secession but that certainly comes to mind when thinking about the Federal Government having a financial meltdown and cutting off most or all support to the States...

What would Texas do in the event that the United States of America defaulted? It is a very real possibility that one day the massive U.S. debt will become so large and unsustainable that is causes a financial meltdown. Texas, and pretty much everyone else, would all of the sudden be faced with no more federal funds (which is really just Texas tax dollars given to the feds which is then given back to Texas). Yes, Texas is already a sovereign state, but what would we do if face with complete sovereignty and no federal money?

What would Texas do? That is actually a GREAT question. It is something you might not have really thought of before because, well, government is mostly reactive and not pro-active so they wait until something is a problem and then they try to deal with it.

State Representative James White is thinking ahead. He does not want to have to wait until Texas gets cut off from the federal government to determine how Texas will manage on our own. White wants to start planning now.

Bottom line, this is a great bill and it is really thinking ahead. With the way America is going, it is a very real possibility that federal funds to Texas could be drastically limited or even cut off completely in the event of a financial collapse. Texas needs to be ready and know what to expect.
