This is the second in a series of articles on why Texas needs a new Speaker of the House in the state legislature. David Simpson (with Bryan’s full endorsement, a proven conservative has courageously stepped forward to challenge the incumbent, Joe Straus, for this position. No doubt this will be a tough challenge. Joe Straus has served his money master well and has amassed a lot of power and influence with those who control the big bucks in Austin; including the more influential Democrats.

It will take Republican state Reps with integrity, courage and a commitment to “service before self” to stand firmly on principle and replace Joe Straus.

2011 Conservative Legislation Killed by Texas Speaker Joe Straus’ Committee Chairs

Posted by David Bellow

Texas Needs a new TRUE Republican Speaker. One who did not have to team up with all the Democrats in order to beat the Republicans and get elected. Bryan Hughes is running against Joe Straus for Speaker.

It is no secret that Joe Straus tried to hurt conservatives in redistricting who voted against him for Texas Speaker of the House. Did you know that Straus also bent over backwards to make sure almost NONE of the GOOD conservative legislation got passed if the legislation was authored by one of the State Reps who voted against him. (See list of killed legislation below) Does that sound like the kind of leader we want for Texas? The kind of leader who says that if you do not vote for him then he will intentionally kill your good legislation to get back at you. The kind of leader who says that if you don’t vote for him then he will hurt you in redistricting?

Thankfully, There was a super-majority of Republicans in the 2011 Texas House of Representatives and so Joe Straus did allow the body to pass conservative legislation. He just made sure that good conservative legislation from people who opposed him did not make it out. Straus is not a man who will lead conservative legislation though. He is a populist who just goes with the flow to try to make the majority happy. He allowed the body to pass conservative legislation because he knew he could not stop it with a super majority of Republicans so he went along with it. If the House was split between Democrats and Republicans then you better believe he would try to play both sides and not stand for conservative legislation. He would play both sides because he knows that in a split house he would need to please the Democrats to stay in power.

Other important facts

Joe Straus refuses to sign the Texas Budget Compact (Press Release, 4/16/2012, Statement on Texas Budget Compact)

Refuses to sign the Taxpayer Pledge (www.taxpayerpledge.com)

Despite a supermajority of Republicans, the House failed to pass spending limits.

Straus told the El Paso Times “We have no choice… you can’t cut your way to prosperity,” This was also said by President Obama in a radio address in 2011

Redistricting facts

Joe Straus’ Redistricting plan punished conservatives (RedState.com, 4/22/2011, Texas Redistricting Plan Punishes Texas Conservatives)

Hispanic conservatives were drawn out of GOP-friendly House districts, including Raul Torres of Corpus Christi, Aaron Pena of Edinburg and Jose Aliseda.

The first House redistricting map had 7 GOP vs. GOP incumbent pairings. This would ensure that we lose 7 GOP house members. It forces a Republican to run against another Republican instead of a Democrat.

Sen. Deuell is the chair of the Senate Nominations Committee, and his committee confirmed a total of 596 nominees with only a small handful who were rejected.

I went down to Austin on April 6, 2011, to talk to Sen. Deuell. I asked Sen. Deuell to move Lowe’s name out of his Senate Nominations Committee and to the floor of the Senate for a vote. I explained to him that SBOE members on both sides of the aisle respect Gail Lowe and that the Board did not need to change chairs right in the midst of the adoption of upcoming curriculum standards and education policies.

In follow-up comments, I explained to Sen. Deuell that they should be begging Gail Lowe to be the SBOE chair again after the fabulous job she had done to conduct fair-minded SBOE meetings during very contentious debates in the midst of the spotlight of the national media. I told Deuell that the Texas Senate had never had to endure the kind of biased national media attention that occurred during the adoption of the Social Studies standards (TEKS), yet Gail Lowe moved undeterred through the adoption process with fairness and decorum.

I carefully explained to Sen. Deuell that powerful Senators had already come out in support of Lowe’s confirmation and that we grassroots citizens would mount so much public pressure for her nomination that the other Senators would be hesitant to vote against Lowe on the floor of the Senate for fear of being ousted themselves in 2012.

Our efforts were ignored, and Sen. Deuell chose to keep Gail Lowe’s name bottled up in his Senate Nominations Committee. She was never allowed an opportunity to appear before the entire Senate to voice her many accomplishments as chair of the SBOE.

Now it is time to “make a believer” out of Sen. Deuell and oust him from the Texas Senate. His actions do have consequences. Deuell is not a conservative; he is a left-leaning moderate. Texas Eagle Forum rated Deuell with a 56% conservative rating, and Young Conservatives of Texas gave him a 58%.

Bob Hall Chosen a Texas CPAC Top 10 Challenger Candidate

(Canton, Texas) – Edgewood resident, Bob Hall won a top spot on the coveted Texas Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC-TX) Conservative Challenger Candidates list.

One-hundred candidates across the state were nominated for the honor and were asked to complete a lengthy questionnaire and take a “Patriot Pledge” confirming their stance on conservative values and ideals.

Approximately 25,000 Texans voted in the poll and Hall’s consistent message of conservatism earned him a place in the Top 10.

“I am honored to be in the Top 10 and have the support of so many people who understand the return of a conservative foundation of America begins at the State level. I am a true Conservative, with core conservative values who has been called to step up and run to repay the debt of our brave Founders and the greatest generation who helped make America the beacon of freedom for the entire world.”

While Hall has voluntarily served his country, earning the rank of a Captain in the US Air Force, he has never held a public office. However, he has been very active with the Tea Party movement. He helped form the Canton Area Tea Party and is a charter member of the East Texas Constitutional Alliance. Since becoming active with the Tea Party movement he has given talks throughout North Texas on what We The People can and must do to return America to the Judeo-Christian values on which it was founded.

Bob and his wife Kay live at Tailwind Airpark in Edgewood, Texas. They are members of Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton, Texas.

Vote the Right Bob -

Most conservatives in Texas Senate District 2 have been voting for Dr. Bob Deuell since he first ran in 2002. Like many of you, I mistakenly thought that he was a solid conservative. But a careful look at his voting record belies this common assumption. Because our nation and state are suffering from government overreach and fiscal waste, the time has come for inquiring minds to take a hard look at Senator Deuell’s voting record. I report, you decide:

Bob Deuell

In 2009, he voted for a bill that expanded half-day pre-kindergarten to full-day. Studies show that full-day pre kindergarten does not improve academic achievement beyond the second grade. Pre-kindergarten is little more than taxpayer funded daycare. Cost to taxpayers: $250 million by 2014. Fortunately, Governor Perry vetoed it.

Also in the 81st Session, he voted for a bill that would have increased reporting requirements for racial profiling, burdening law enforcement with more red tape. The justification for this bill was that racial profiling was “a national issue,” and “continues to be a topic of discussion.” Surely our representatives have better things to do! I know law enforcement does. Of course the additional information on racial profiling would have been shared with our race-obsessed federal government, even though the ethnicity of who we arrest in Texas is none of their business. Racial profiling is a legitimate tool of law enforcement, and should not be treated as though it were some shadowy evil that had to be monitored by The State. Thankfully, this bill did not become law.

Senate Bill 108, also of the 81st Session, established funds for “green-jobs skills training.” The future of the green industry, and the faulty science it is based upon, is dicey at best. When politicians vote to invest in dubious businesses, no matter how fashionable, they don’t risk their money, they risk our money. Estimated cost to taxpayers: $17 million. Deuell voted for it. Fortunately for Texas taxpayers, it did not pass.

Speaking of green, Senate Bill 16, also of the 81st, would have implemented a state agenda similar to the uber-radical, United Nations Kyoto Protocol. Had it passed, it would have required Texas’s Natural Resource Conservation Commission, the Rail Road Commission, and the Public Utilities Commission to participate in “developing federal greenhouse gas reporting requirements” and would have included “a greenhouse gas registry. Yes, Senator Deuell voted for this one too.

I wonder how many of you would be surprised to learn that Senator Deuell voted for a bill (HB 592/81st Session) that would have given minors access to prescription contraceptives without parental consent. What was the rationale behind this disgrace? Had it passed, would it have drastically reduced the number of teenage pregnancies? Would it have even slightly reduced the number of teenage pregnancies? The answer would be “No” to both. The bill’s analysis states that, “Better access to contraceptives helps reduce the occurrence of closely spaced pregnancies” for teenagers. That’s right! Our Senator Deuell voted to undermine parental authority so teenage girls wouldn’t have their babies so close together. Amazing.

Texas taxpayers also should know that Texas Eagle Forum (56), Empower Texans (F), and Young Conservatives of Texas (58) all give Senator Deuell failing grades for his regular support of tax and spend legislation so popular in Austin and Washington today.

Bob Hall

Senator Deuell has a challenger in this year’s Republican Primary. His name is Bob Hall. While both Bobs are committed to the unborn, and both are reliable supporters of the Second Amendment, we can do better. The right Bob is a genuine, grassroots, Constitutional conservative who will be a watchdog for taxpayers. He’s ready to go to Austin and begin the mammoth job of returning this State to its citizens. Check him out for yourself at VoteBobHall.com. Whichever Bob wins the primary will be our next state senator. Your vote for Bob Hall in the Republican Primary is crucial to our state’s future. If you aren’t registered to vote, by all means-do it today. Our children and grandchildren deserve the right Bob in Austin. God bless Texas!

Cathie Adams endorses Bob Hall for State Senate, District 2

(Canton, Texas) – Edgewood resident, Bob Hall, earned a key supporter in his race for State Senate in District 2, which includes portions of Dallas, Kaufman, Van Zandt, Hunt, Rockwall, Delta, Fannin, Rains and Hopkins Counties.

Cathie Adams, President of Texas Eagle Forum and former Republican Party of Texas Chairman, has publicly endorsed Hall and his candidacy to unseat the incumbent, Bob Deuell.

Adams said, “Bob Hall is uniquely qualified to be an advocate for smaller government and lower taxes. After a successful career in the corporate world, Bob started a family business where he has endured unnecessary regulations and excessive taxes. As an Air Force veteran, Bob was a leader among leaders in defense of the U.S. Constitution and our Founders’ conservative principles. Texas voters would be privileged to have Bob Hall as their State Senator. I invite you to join me in supporting him.” On receiving the endorsement, Hall said, “I have long admired Cathie Adams and am honored to have the support of such a well-respected leader who realizes the responsibility that we, as TRUE constitutional conservatives, have to protect individual liberty, respect for family integrity and private enterprise.” Bob and his wife Kay live at Tailwind Airpark in Edgewood, Texas. They are members of Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton, Texas. Visit www.VoteBobHall.com for more information on Mr. Hall or his campaign.

Cathie Adams is President of the Texas Eagle Forum. She also serves on the board of the national Eagle Forum and as its “International Issues” chairman (www.eagleforum.org). She was elected chairman of the Republican Party of Texas in 2009 and was named by Campaigns and Elections magazine’s August 2010 issue as one of the top 50 Republican influencers in Texas.
